E89 3.0l shocks query

Hi All,
Been looking at getting a E89, preferably an 6 cylinder and have seen an 09 plate, 106k miles with (allegedly) FSH. Looking at its MOT history it seems the shocks mostly front seem to be in the advisories - OSF at 49k , NSF at 59k both with serious leaks. NSR at 90k with serious leak, NSF again at 90k with slight misting, The last NSF is on the last MOT, last January.
My query is:
1. Is this normal wear for the mileage?
2. How much are the shocks to replace? I’ve looked on AUTODOC and Euro Car Parts and they start around £60 and go up and up.
Also, there’s associated tyre wear together with the shocks on the MOT’s which I assume is normal with them not operating at their best.
Regards,
Michael.

Anything over 60k miles depending on roads and weather is about it for an E89 shocks without either visible or not visible degradation..IMHO

OE replacements start at the prices you mention..many folks at that point go for Bilsteins or other uprated shocks.

Tyre wear is mostly due to the stock aggressive rear camber and folks not doing enough high speed cornering to even up the wear…they just don’t see the inside edges wearing out..

Was it a 30i or 35i(s)?

35i/35is adaptive shocks piss oil out pretty early on..

Yes that car has all the hallmarks of a typical 35i/35is car…

The adaptive shocks are notorious for letting go from anywhere north of 25k miles

£2k to replace…

If you’ve not read about the perils of the 35i/35is models I strongly urge you to read up to save you from or in the full knowledge of what does go wrong with these babies… :tumbleweed:

I found my front shocks to be shot (car has 110k on it),but the rears seems to still be ok. I replaced mine with some chinese electronic shocks from Ebay at a cost of about $600 US and,I also replaced all 4 springs. They work fine and I am very happy with them....

Think I’ll give that one a miss. 23i’s it is then

You can get a 3.0 that isn’t a 35i(S) which is a NA version like the 23i and badged 30i. It’s more desirable but a good bit rarer than the 23i. If I was in your position I’d be looking for a nice 30i. Regarded by many as the sweet spot all rounder model of the E89. Only when you step up to a 35i(S) do you encounter most of the issues B21 mentions. Good luck with your search
