E89 23i remap any experiences ?

Have been using the current lockdown situation to consider options regarding the car when we can drive freely again. Considerations have gone from remapping my 23i to changing up to a 4 pot 28i of 6 pot 3.0, does anybody have any experience of a remapped 23i ? the power / torque gain claimed by Celtic is modest at 16 bop and 16 lbs ft. I have always thought that unless an increase in power is in the region of 10% it may not be noticeable, although accept drive ability may make it feel more sporty / fast / responsive.

The car is a 60 plate with 36k miles on the clock so not too worried that the engine is fragile due to mileage etc.
Any experiences .

I would imagine it's the same as chip tuning the N52 30i no real power gains but a smoother better drive. If that is what you are after do it but if you really want more power, change the car.

Yep you're dead right, had my 23i mapped by Celtic, I think it gained around 10bhp at the most, non turbo cars simply don't benefit in terms of raw performance.
What the map does do though is alter all the power delivery curves to make the car faster and smoother.

Thankyou for the replies. Although a 28i would be a nice power upgrade I have been seduced by the 6 cylinder sounds over the last few years, I guess it is either a few hundred pounds to get to 220 bhp or Upgrading to a 3.0 at circa 255 bhp for a bigger cash injection.
Will keep an eye on the market to see what is around, then decide when we can all get mobile again and can actually look at a few in the flesh.

I’ve been think about this too, not hung up on bhp but interested when you say it makes it faster and smoother - was it worth doing in your opinion then?

I thought so, just depends if you think it’s worth the cash outlay. If I bought another 23i I would do it again.

I had mine done about 12 months ago. You won’t find it makes a great deal of difference. As others have said it does smooth it out a bit but it doesn’t make the car any faster.

I would be interested if you can actually feel a lot of difference in a 30i.... I remapped my 23i manual, and I also drive a 2003 e85 3.0i smg and although the 3.0i feels torquier (very very slightly, but also take weight into consideration) I made a lot a measurements and both cars do 0-100kph, 80-180kph etc. in almost dead same times...

 Do you recall how much, no prices quoted on Celtic site, just ‘contact us”

Or did you use someone else?

I used these people http://remap-uk.co.uk/

Cheers, just had a look - they’re claiming a 50 hp increase on my car - is that the sort of figures they were claiming to you or a mistake on their site? In their blurb 20-25% is their claimed normal increase which backs up the 50 hp but I was honestly expecting about 10-15 hp max, more a better delivery of existing power.

Not if you speak to them. 🙂 About 10 bhp is all you can expect but it isn’t really noticeable. It certainly sharpens the car up a bit but don’t expect to get over excited about it all! 😉

 Thanks, sharpening up sounds good

From memory Celtic we’re quoting around £400 for a 23i, if you took it to their Newquay facility I think it included a pre install health check and a rolling road session. I assume the rolling road is post install. For the miles I do fuel consumption is not particularly important but assume it would be about the same post map.

I know it's in german, but here you can see extensive dyno results for E89s, including 23i: https://www.zroadster.com/forum/threads/e89-chiptuning.85018/page-5

Use google translate...

Just had a reply from Celtic. £295 all inclusive for the basic map done at your home or work, £365 for e motion+ which appears to be a self tune device which they post to you to play with. Not interested in the e motion+ but £295 for a remap seems very tempting regardless of whether I ultimately change to a 3 litre variant.

How much extra for the pre/post dyno runs to prove any increase they get and where it occurs? :?
