E89 23i back box delete?

Hey everyone!

First post here, just picked up a 23i as my first 'real car' and am loving it!

One thing is it seems a bit quiet and so with a little research it seems like a decent amount of people have been doing back box deletes on Z4s (Mostly the previous generation?). Does anyone have any experience with this for the E89's?

(Honestly, I don't know much about exhaust mods, but this one seems to appeal since it is easily reversible & inexpensive)

I've heard a facelift E85 3.0Si (so same N52 engine as your E89) with a back-box delete, and it's loud!

I definitely wouldn't recommend getting it done before you have heard one.

Asked a similar question, as like you I have a 23i which is a little quiet and I wished for a little more noise, without it becoming a chav mobile

Thanks a lot, that sounds good I’ll have a further look... I definitely don’t want it too loud or to ruin the sound!

Yep that’s basically where I’m at, it hate to ruin the sound of it, just don’t know too much about the options.. Did you end up doing anything else?
 
Did you decide on the back box delete in the end?

I went ahead with mine a few months ago and have never looked back, but it definitely isn't to a lot of peoples tastes. If you'd like, I can send you a video of before and after of my 23i (terrible quality but its a benchmark). The idle isn't all bad and I recently did a 200 mile journey with it and had absolutely no issues at all with drone.

Does the 23i have an exhaust valve like 18/20/28 and 35i/s ? If it does Id be try the well documented "golf tee mod" first.

At one point on my E85 I tried it with the backbox off while we were modding it and good god it was ear bleedingly terrible! :rofl:

I don't think it does, as far as I know it's just on the turbo models.
