E89 20i Remap Booked

Not to bore you all again (maybe we should have a dedicated discussion topic on remaps :-))

Anyway, I'm booked in for the end of next week; it just so happens my insurance premium is due the same time.

I'll post again post-remap, but if anyone has questions in the meantime...

You are going to tell your insurance company!!

If so, why? It is almost impossible to tell if a car has been mapped.

Legally he should tell them, and it makes sense for the likely small increase. Pretty sure insurance company's can see remaps too if they pull the ecu.

Hi all having just bought a E89 Sdrive 2.0 m sport I'm pondering about the remap and wondered if anything else needed upgrading- brakes, water /oil cooling? etc to cope with the substantial power increase .
Anyone who has had it done and told their insurance how much extra was it ? Cheers G

Looks like the topic is still popular :-)

To address a few of the questions...
1) a contact at the Company doing the 'tuning' also told me that they can't tell when the re-map was done, so it could have been before I purchased the vehicle... BUT, I like everything above board, and don't want to take the chance of a void insurance policy. If you get the right insurance company, it shouldn't cost much more than £50 a year extra.
2) @Gjm91- I read somewhere that other more powerful E89s do not have uprated components fitted, so you should be fine.

[ref]Broads[/ref], [ref]Boltz[/ref] - either of you looking at any exhaust mods for sound enhancement?

Cheers zedconvert - be interested to hear what your post remap thoughts are - watch those speed cameras :driving:

Not yet, but inevitably that will probably come over time. Please post if you find something suitable.. If indeed you are looking...

Before you declare it to your insurance talk to the people doing the mapping. Last map I had was on a new mercedes, I asked the guy doing it if Mercedes could see it when I had a service he told me flatly 'no chance'. To detect this you would have to remove the ECU and send it to a specialist, no insurance company is ever likely to do that. Declaring it may also find its way to the ears of any warranty provider you may using, they will cancel your warranty immediately.

So my question is to the illustrious Mr Bear (of the Smart variety) as he has become the de facto expert on this.

Does the Evolve remap show up on the BMW radar?
Does it need to be declared?
If so, what kind of added premium does it attract?

Thank you.

[ref]enuff_zed[/ref], hey, I spoke to Quantum directly, they can read from the ECU that it's been remapped but no-one can tell when.

My premium went up about £50 a year.

... Each to their own :driving:

Thank you,
I had been looking at Evolve; only because it has been a popular move on here and people have been running it for quite a while now.
However, I would assume that Quantum, Celtic and any others all have the same basic premise, so the same logic should apply.

Even if it was already mapped prior to getting the car (or you played all innocent and said you didn’t know), would that hold water? Technically you are driving an undeclared mod and don’t forget the wriggle power of insurance companies!

Gonna ask AXA what they would charge. They said no extra for non-runflats as long as same size as oem.

Bloody forum...that’s a remap and smarttop that I now need!

[ref]ihadablackdog[/ref], yeah... My previous insurance company didn't add anything for me going from 17" RFs to 19" Non-RFs.

I would just rather declare everything, and not run the risk. :fuelfire:

So I emailed AXA (they were cool about changing to non-rft).

They don't cover remaps!

Due for renewal in September so might look around at that time, just incase I do do it.

Which insurers are ok with remaps?

[ref]ihadablackdog[/ref], you need to try Chris Knott Insurance (there's a discussion forum on here dedicated). Or the one that worked well for me this year is Adrian Flux Insurance.

They both specialise in modified cars.

Out of interest, where are you based?
