Considering moving in to a newer e89 to replace my 30i, not red or black.
decent spec and low mileage preferred.
Just seeing what may be available, but needs to be a tidy one , as mine is very clean and not looking for one thats not been looked after.
Most of what i see on auto trader and the others are far from my idea of well cared for.
Happy if its been mapped, as i would look to do that anyway.
if anyone wants a very clean 30i, it will go up for sale as soon as i find its replacement......
Budget will be up to 15k

I could potentially have the car for you!
Just got to get the boss to decide whether she wants to sell.

Looks like a nice car..just pondering what’s motivated to change ?

Nothing wrong with change but technically not much changed over the production life of the E89.

Obviously options and the eternal engine debates did…but most things were pretty unchanged over time…?

That could tempt me back into an e89.. IF i was, looking to be tempted 8)

Someone will get a beauty when that goes up for sale

I love the 89, but just looking to move forward to a newer car.
My problem is finding one that’s as well looked after In similar condition.
Love the 30i, but as we know, can’t get a newer 89 30i.
So a 4 pot is the only option.
If I can find the right car then I’ll let mine go, if not then I’ll keep it.

Well the good news is there’s no shortage of 18i/20i/28i out there…plenty fully loaded..

I think you’ve just got to be patient..

There will be some good ones..if you entertain earlier ones then the £1k cam chain / oil pump drive update renders the earlier ones pretty much as good as later ones..so then you can buy on condition and goodies content..

Thanks for the advice mate.
Early days, but as you say, lots out there.
Would prefer a forum car if it’s the right one, and I’m in no rush.

As always all about timing..I regret having to sell my 20i..it was a peach..

Yes, they most certainly would, hence my caution in making sure I don’t go newer, but end up with a car that’s a step back from what I have .
I’ve literally addressed most if not all of the 89 issues, as well as some tasteful mods.

What seems to be the consensus of opinion on these pre 2015 timing chain issues?
Is it a case of when rather than if it will fail?
Is it mileage dependent?
Just need to decide if it’s better to avoid pre 2015, or buy expecting it to need doing, or wait and hope ?
Cheers Pete.

Yep, newer or not you couldn't tempt me into a 4 pot over that car, no disrespect to the blower guys but Im just more into the 6 cyl n/a cars and that is about as nice as an e89 could get, i think if staying in a z4 was my end goal only the 35i could move me out of that..or perhaps a used g29

If I was going to have another N20, I’d definitely be allowing for the remedial work to be done in my budgeting. I wouldn’t be put off an earlier car though. In some respects, buying an earlier car for the right price and immediately having the cam chain updated would give me additional peace of mind over a car with the newer guide from the factory but 40k miles under its chain.

Get where you’re coming from , but seems to go against the grain, if you’re upgrading a current Z , buying a car that you’ve either got to spend a wedge of money to fix a weak point , or drive around thinking, is it about to go, what’s that noise.
To me it takes away the excitement of a new car.
🤷‍♀️

Keep the current one :poke:

Why would you want a remap you never get over 40mph anyway :poke:
Personally I’d stick with what you have, it’s a lovely motor and it’s got 6 cylinders, I think changing would be a step backwards

The cam chain issue is a bit like a lot of medical issues..take lung cancer..people swear they smoked 60 a day and it never affected them..aka my mother who died 93 from old age...

However if you distill it down it seems..

The camchain issue is particulary affected by extensive use of stop start

Infrequent oil changes

General town use..

I've known them go as early as 50k..most that go seems to be in the 70k upwards..

There's a guy in the states gone past 500k miles on one of these..he spends all his day ferrying pets/dogs for a business..no issues apart from pads, tyres n discs.

Not everyone gets one..I'd say its a 5% -10% probability issue--ish..comapred to the ticking time bomb of a 35is I find it quite funny..

Post April 15 its the new camchain as the easy opton..make sure the production date is 4/15 onwards....a lot of stock hung around..

Its easy to spot a fucked engine looking in the top and listening..

I assume you are going to get it remapped..I'd just factor it in..you can wave goodbye to everybody but a 35is then!-:)

And he won't keep up with you on the twisties..

So you're spending gazzilions on a car that you're developing to not keep up with a car that you sold in the first place for market value.....you're not working for the SNP financial department are you Peter....? :poke: :poke:
