E89 20i - Hill Assist

Obviously, if the foot brake NEEDS to be pressed, then you wont be able to get the clutch to biting point whilst applying some revs.
I realise that this has now proven not to be the case, but even if it were then it would be easily achievable by using Heel & Toe.

One question for those of you who have the EPB - how difficult is it to achieve a controlled handbrake turn when using the EPB? I imagine that the on/off nature of it makes your timing much more critical?

I never have and never will do a hanbrake turn in my zed.... I'm not 17 and hang about in the local Asda car park of an evening.. :?

John, it is useful on a rally stage...

Whilst i'm with John on this, fail to see the need to perform handbrake turns...maybe if you are a part time get-away driver, however i would imagine an on/off handbrake makes the task a bit easier. when setting up a mountain bike i'd always leave plenty of modulation on the front brake and set up the rear on / off for this very reason - it's far easier to time a slide with a less progressive brake.

The use of such a thing 'controlled' on a racetrack perhaps for drifting purposes? If so, then no, that's not going to be possible on an e89 without modification. As the e89 was not really intended for track use, more of a daily transport, BMW have implemented something that takes less space in the cabin.

Or are we talking a controlled 180 handbrake turn, then clearly thats a very different thing and I can't see that being of use anywhere other than as JDM mentions, if you're 17 (or perhaps a TV stunt driver).

If you want to drift, then stick with the z4m.. and frankly, if you had the chance to drift a z4m on a racetrack, why wouldn't you! :driving:

I doubt a hand brake turn is possible in an e89.

Pulling up on the switch when the car is moving commands the service brakes to do a controlled panic stop. The electric rear wheel actuators only activate when the car is at a complete stop.

Guys as said above, my current loaner has the 8 spd auto and it is a fantastic piece of kit which I am looking forward to having in my zed. While cruising you don't even notice the gear changes and when hooning I really don't think you could be as quick in a manual. In sport mode the response is instant and pushes the revs up to redline. Paddles should be interesting for that additional piece of control, particularly when decellerating.

I also think given the 8 gears economy might be better as in comfort the gear changes are optimised by the software mapping. Fair enough you have the change indicator but then there is the human element  I am getting almost 38 mpg with mixed driving in a 328i which is heavier.

Seriously, try and get a test drive of any Beemer with this box and you'll love it I reckon. :driving:

No regrets

As you say, this has now been proven to not be the case, but had it been, then would heel & toe have been acceptable to the majority of normal drivers? It wouldn't for me.

A lot of my early posts on this subject were before I even had the car, so I was commenting on something I didn't know. Now I've had the car a few weeks, I haven't found any problem doing hill starts. No rolling back, no beeping from the car cos the brake isn't released in time. In fact, its just seems so natural. As I've said before though, steep hills will be different - I have tried some steep hills and it was definitely different, but for normal hill starts, perfectly doable. Parking on a hill might be different though.

I rang my dealer today and told them that my car's hill assist function appeared to be not working.

The salesman said that it might need some adjustment and to ring the service desk to book it in. I duly rang the service desk and told them the problem and it's booked in for Wednesday.

I'll keep you informed. I'm sure you will be interested to hear what they have to say after I take it in to be 'adjusted' on Wednesday.

Guess they didn't read the memo. . .

I wrote a one page article about Hill Assist and the e89 and submitted it to Straight Six. They've accepted it into their "Magazine Bank." It will get published but I have no idea when.

Can you forward me a copy of that? Promise not to pretend I wrote it or give it to anyone else.......

It is what I've posted in this thread cleaned up with good grammar and no run on sentances and misspelled words.

There isn't anything new in there, I've just turned my posts into an article. ummmm It might be too big for a PM. . .

Well I got a final offer of £700 from BMW UK as a good will gesture. I have accepted it.

Great news relative to some of the other offers people have received. For me, no money is really going to make me happy. Been talking to BMW for over a month now, and their offer is due tomorrow by 10am.

As much as it pains me, I will be more likely to just give the car back than take the money. As someone else managed to agree with BMW, unfortunately the replacement Auto is not really for me or my wife either (although I say that without having driven one, so I could change my mind). So lets see where we end up.

Did you talk through any other options with BMW KiethJ?

The only other option was 350 haha!

Now to think about what I should use it for. It's dealership credit so I don't know what I can't get with it. Not really fancying the sat nav, wouldn't mind the parking sensors. The other option is to order stuff from the BMW clothing catalogue lol! Seen a really nice M Shirt!

Servicing? Accessories? Reprogramming? etc. etc.

Yes as in save the credit for a nav map update (iDrive?), or a software update that adds features etc. There's loads of things u could spend it on.
