E89 20i buying advice

Greetings. I'm in the market for an LCI 20i automatic; my budget will just stretch to any of these and I have a few questions please.

I understand there was a cam chain issue with 2013 and 2014 models. Was this fixed for free with a recall, so if I find one that hasn't has it fixed, can I still get BMW to sort it?

What does the M Sport variant have over the standard (apart from badging)?

Does the M Sport always come with 19" wheels? I have seen on here that they can crack from the inside, which is very difficult to spot, and the tyres are more expensive and the run flat ones have a terrible ride quality.

It seems that the Professional sat nav is the better option of the two available. Is there any simple way to tell which one is fitted?

No, yes.

An Indy should be able to do this and the associated oil pump drive for around £1k

MSport had sports seats, M badging on door sills, steering wheel, wheels, maybe on the side flank..

MSport came with 18” or 19” wheels, the 19” 326M was the most high profile for cracking as you said on the inside..

MSport had 10mm lower ride height with revised springs n dampers..

All E89s came with runflats

The revised camchain came in early 2015..April I think.

There was only one version of iDrive with sat nav..maybe you are thinking of audio systems..

Thanks very much for this. I think I have heard of a Business sat nav, but it may have been for a different model.

Other than cosmetic changes, was there much in the LCI?

No..they changed the headlights so the Angel Eyes used LED custom design rather than H7 halogens..you can get much of the same effect with H7 led bulbs

The side repeater was a much nicer (IMHO) design which again you can retrofit for £100 ish

The minor bezels round the stop start button changed from matt black to gloss black

That was it..

They brought a brain damaged 18i budget price model in..

Rest was interior trim and colour changes..

All the various design changes came in piecemeal over time ,entirely decoupled from the LCI event.. :tumbleweed:

Business was the radio

A small amount of surgery sorts that out though! :D

Fortunately in technological products it’s usually very easy to correct the ‘mistakes’ of marketing….sadly in real life not so…

So you’re saying we’re stuck with Pondy as he is ?

Thanks for all of the above. I was looking for a 20i, but this 28i popped up which ticks all of my boxes apart from heated seats; I will close my eyes to the Anthracite wood ;-)

Again, I was looking for an LCI, mostly for the design change to fix the cam chain issue, but this one has had it done.

The dealer says they made a mistake and it doesn't have heated seats. Also, the side badges don't say M Sport. The description says it is M Sport, and to my limited knowledge, the toys would also suggest so. Was it possible to get the M Sport badge deleted, and would you have to go out of your way to not have heated seats in a 28i M Sport?

Any other observations please?

The side badges never said msport only sdrive and engine designation so cant use that to judge.

The car does look like a sport (steering wheel has it on) and it has sport seats, the front spoiler looks like an sport version to me (no chrome bar at the bottom)and it has the higher reflector on the rear.

Heated seat is your preference, I liked it as it certainly made the car more useable on slightly colder days.

A chrome M badge was placed on the flanks of some E89s..as part of the MSport designation..but not all MSport versions had that badge..

For the UK if you use an E89 as IMHO it should be (top down most of the time) then heated seats is a must..

Many thanks for all of the info on here. I have bought the 28i. The only toy it is missing is heated seats. I will investigate adding them later. The dealer said that all of the wiring would be in place, and it is just a matter of swapping the seats, but as the switches are not present, I expect there is more to it than that.
