E89 2011 23i Highline Issues

Hey all,

I bought a 23i with 25k on the clock which is beautiful! BUT it has a few niggles. The 1st of which I knew about, being the e-brake issue. Light is on, does not engage so have to leave in gear parked on a flat. I believe it may be the module for it - £40 refurbished/used working.

The other issue I've found is that I drove it back from Sussex to Somerset with no issues. Parked up for a few days. Went to start it and the LCD display fickered and just died.

I bought a jump pack which worked fine and started it ok, revved perfect. I need to test the battery to see if that is the cause, but what is the likelihood of it being the alternator?

Sorry I can't help with your handbrake issue, but if you can check the voltage with the engine running the reading you get should tell you if the alternator is working.

Cheers guys. If it isn't the battery, it must be a drain but will sort battery 1st anyway - peace of mind. Maybe that's what the e-brake issue is down to, heard that degrading battery can cause this.

If the e-brake issue is batter related and needs an update software wise, do I NEED to take it to BMW?

I’ve heard of people getting the ebrake software updated by an independent, don’t know which ones can do this though? :?

Actually thinking about it I got random warning lights when my battery was dying, so that may be why you've got the handbrake light issue.

If the light doesn't go out when the new battery has been fitted your best bet would be to get the fault codes read from the OBD.

You don't need to go to BMW for that, there are plenty of Independent BMW Specialists. Or you could buy a code reader, or see if there is anyone on here with Carly or other code readers:- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=97818

I hope a new battery sorts it.

Handbrake issue is a known fault, mine had this too. A software update fixes this but once it's happened, changing (or charging) the battery won't.

Well I got a new battery fitted and registered, had all fault codes cleared. E-brake issue still there so guessing either it's the module, or as you guys say need an update.

Can the software be updated using Carly? Probably not...

At least the car starts lol there is a slight misfire so will invest in a coil and test them out

If its the same issue that others have had on here it will need a software update for the handbrake.
It doesnt need a dealer to do this, indys should be able to do it as well. Thats where we go ours done.

Previous owner said it was the module, and tried fitting one for a 3.0 which obviously didn't work. So we reckon software update then peeps?

It’s best to get the codes read first to eliminate guesswork

Whereabouts are you in Somerset? there are a few independents about who could help
Sounds like the battery - so many electrics linked that are voltage dependent, I had the warning when I purchased mine that if any of the dash lights start fading or playing up to get a new battery sharpish

Hi, I’m new to the area myself so it’s always good to hear of any good indi’s in the area-could you post who they are?

I've used Grants of Wellington a few times, albeit for my Girlfriends mini - but they seem knowledgeable about the Z and have a good reputation locally.

I haven't used them, but i've heard mixed reviews from friends about Jacks in Taunton - so probably not one for me ;)

Cheers

Scott
