So on the trial for our first e89 , noticed a few 2.3 6 cylinder cars and some 3.0 ones are they the same engine, just bored out? Or if different which is the most reliable with less faults , and what are the faults

One of BMW's most reliable engines, given choice go the rarer 3.0. Nice to have extra HP.
But more likely to find a 2.3 with colour and interior you want.

So same unit then šŸ‘
Look same i assume slightly bigger bore.
I haven't seen anyone on forum with the normally aspirated 2.5 or 3.0 engine have issues.
Only one's i have had is oil leak into spark plug hole, warped cam cover, at 95k miles.
On 104k now on the 2.3, runs like sewing machine.

Would a 117k miles car worry you, I know I’d need to check service history and general condition of the car

Mines on 147k miles and still runs like clockwork.

Plenty of people in the US with 250-300k miles on N52 engines. Like anything, keep up with regular maintenance and use decent parts when you do

Someone recently posted on here about his E86 with the 3 litre N52 that had done 250K!

I had a 325i with the 2.5 litre N52 that had done nearly 140K, and replaced it with a 330i that has now done 125K and they both performed brilliantly.

The only potential issues are ancillaries like alternators, starter motors and the notorious electric water pump and oil leaks!

But if you get one of those problems you'll only get it once during your ownership, and they can afflict any engine at that sort of mileage - so no, 117K wouldn't bother me.

My 23i is on 114k at the moment, regular servicing and I use it every day. I've had the cam cover and associated gaskets replaced some 5 years ago and it's been fine. There was a fusebox main power cable recall a few years back, which should have been done by now and there's the current Vanos screws recall ongoing at the moment (I'm still waiting for mine to be called in).
Apart from that they are bombproof, so it's down to what equipment (options) you want (and as a heads-up, everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was a option!!) so look around for the spec you'd like

My 23i is somehow improving its fuel economy and is on about 37mpg right now. Not sure if I'm doing more motorway miles or I'm getting lighter footed!
