E89 2.0 m sport idle noise

Hi all just picked up a E89 2.0 m sport s drive - loving getting to know the car and love the way it drives - one thing I have noticed is it sounds quite diesel like on tick over when stationary -the noise goes once over about 1000 rpm- I have read about the engine timing chain issues on the n20 engine but that is supposed to manifest itself as a whine - anyone else with the n20 engine- does yours sound diesel like on tick over -many thanks Greg

What year is your car? The engine cover had improved acoustic properties in later models to mute the sound of the direct injection engine. :?

Yes they can sound a bit dieselly on initial tickover

Your are correct the cam chain/tensioner is a very pronounced whine
