E86 Water Pump Question

Hi All
Looking into a number of preventable maintenance tasks to undertake and was wondering about the electric water pump. My car is a 2006 (87000 miles) and had the pump replaced under warranty in 2012 ( 31000 miles). Does anyone know if the replacement pumps were any more reliable than the original units?

I think if it’s approaching 10 years service I’d be inclined to change it, they always fail at the most inconvenient moment possible :roll:

I didn't know too much about the electric water pump issue when I had my 1st E86, but soon found out when it died on almost exactly 60K miles.

Luckily it was a cold evening in December and I was only a few miles from home so driving gently I made it OK. And as my Indy was only a couple of miles from home I was able to drive it there before it got hot for a replacement.

My next E86 seemed to still be on the original pump when I sold it on 91K miles.

My E91 325i had the pump die 15 miles from home (and further from my destination) on a warm day in May so I stopped in a convenient layby while I waited for the RAC, who towed it to my Indy where I left it until he could fit it in. It had done 135K miles, so may have been its 2nd replacement! OK that messed up my plans for that day, but then I just drove my Z4 instead until it was fixed. :lol:

I suppose it depends how dependent you are on having your E86 available, if you have any trips planned and how much breakdown cover you have!
 
I don’t have any sense of when my water pump was changed, I’m assuming that there isn’t any way to identify if it is an old pump or starting to die?

Am I right in thinking the only approach is to replace it for peace of mind?

I think I will replace mine, along with the thermostat and expansion tank. I hope to use the car for European touring (whenever) so will definitely do the work before leaving these shores.

Leaving this morning for a drive along Loch Tay then over to Oban on the west coast then through Glen Coe and back home. Beautiful morning up here . :driving:

For peace of mind I would also replace the thermostat. I also went down the preventative maintenance route with my e86 as I had scant service history and the car had 150k on the clock.
 
As you can see from my signature, I did not replace my pump as a preventative measure! :!: 'Luckily' it failed when I was only a couple of miles from home. Was an easy DIY job to replace, took about an hour. Waiting for the expansion tank to crack now!! :wink:
