E86 Sport Seats

I’m new to the fold so please forgive me if this is one of those topics that’s been covered 100x (I’ve tried searching) but I’m in the market for an E86 Z4 3.0 Coupe.

I admit I’m quite picky about the spec I want, but I’m in no rush. However the final stumbling block always tends to be the interior leather colour!

Are the champagne/tan sport seats an undesirable colour or is it just me that doesn’t seem to like them? Just thinking if I found my perfect Zed, bar the interior, would people likely take up an interior swap for a champagne interior? Black, red or that lovely brown would obviously be what I’m after, but haven’t yet found a car without compromise.

Hi and welcome! While champagne definitely has its followers (me being one of them), there will always be different choices. Swapping out a black interior isn’t a huge job when limited to the seats, and there are plenty of black M-sport seats coming up for sale.

Note that there’s a difference between beige and champagne, with the former arguably being slightly less desirable. Ironically, a friend of mine ([ref]MaldivesMax[/ref]) is in the market for a pair of beige M-sports, so you’d
be able to sell them on

Maybe share a link of the car you’re considering? That way we’d be able to see what you’re considering and how extensive a swap would be. I replaced my fully beige interior for black, but that included all the trims, carpets, panels and seats…

Champagne nappa (the finer/softer leather option) M Sport seats are soooo very nice indeed.

Champagne/beige also lends itself well to being dyed, if you do find the perfect car and can’t find a viable swap. I believe the lovely brown colour you’re referring to may be Amarone and should be a simple enough dye job, if you fancied it. In saying that, leather dyeing isn’t something I’ve tackled! Usel on here is my interior guru, so would be able to explain the process in more detail I’m sure :D

Welcome to the forum.

Just to clarify I'm assuming you are referring to the M-Sport seats that were standard in Sport models, only BMW called the seats in the SE Sport seats but they really aren't!

Champagne seats were a cost option because they are Nappa leather which is better quality than the standard Oregon leather which did come in Beige although New England leather is even better quality and could be ordered in Beige.

I don't mind the lighter seats - my first two E86s had Pearl Grey. But I'm not so keen when the centre console and carpets are Beige too as it feels a bit overwhelming!

To find out exactly what seats are fitted you could try entering the VIN on a decoding website.

Anyway good luck with your search.

The amarone is a kind of purple colour, the brown is likely to be caramel.
Either way, the ordinary Oregon leather is easy to dye using FurnitureClinic products although lightening a darker colour is probably difficult. For instance I dyed my Oregon blacks partly blue.

Thanks for all the info, hadn’t thought about dyeing to be fair. I’ve spent a bit of time looking at the interiors and have come around to the champagne interior, tan on the other hand…

I’m looking at these two

What are people’s thoughts?

I personally like the last car , black/red is a great combo. The first two , would not be for me. I’ve never liked the tan/beige/caramel
interior and I doubt I would ever buy one. Good luck with your search.

My vote for the silver. (i'm a sucker for a silver car)
Refurbed 108's, preventative maintenance, and good photos showing it's had an owner that appreciates it. And it does not have the dashboard maps which are outdated and just something else to go wrong. (although could the other one just have a storage bucket, rather than the screen? I cannot tell the difference yet as I'm still learning the Z4 spec options)

They're both pretty equal though, both having maintenance completed and suspension upgrades.
ooo, it's a tough call. It could be a coin flip to decide!

The dealer black is lovely, but having owned 2 black cars (and still have 1), I found them a pain to keep clean.

[ref]Meds[/ref], the Z4 never had a storage bin on the dash, it’s nav or nothing  Although I believe a few people have retrofitted an X3 storage cubby when their screens went wonky

Yep that’s exactly what I have done
