E86 - Roof Hydraulic Hose 14

Half acre

New member
Hi Ive recently replaced the pump for the roof without removing the roof, I now need to replace hydraulic hose 14. Is it possible to replace the hose without removing the roof?. Also does anyone have a drawing/detail of exactly where the hose connects?.
I purchased the Haines 'Autofix' download thinking it would be like an old fashioned manual, unfortunately it isn't.
I have purchased the replacement hose from Cabriolet roof hoses.
Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance

No, it’s not. The hoses connect to the Ram which is below the body line, so the roof will have to lift out to access the connections.

It’s possible to part lift it rather than the whole lot if you know what you’re doing, but still a fiddle, especially if corroded in that area.

Where are you located ?

PS. If it’s got a convertible roof, it’s an E85, not E86 (Couoe)

Watching for location in case I can help?

Hi Gents,

Thanks for your responses and yes it is a convertible so an E85 rather than the E86 that I had originally gone with.

Im based in Battle, East Sussex, so if anyone's local I would jump at the chance of a bit of guidance.

Alternatively are there any tips/pointers that you could advise on regarding the roof removal, I've watched several you tube clips and its really just getting the seal back in to make it all waterproof again that really concerns me.

If the weathers good on Sunday I may give it a go then :)

Thanks

Paul

Bit far from me, sorry.
The seal round the back isn't too bad. It's the weird shaped ones beside the rams that cause the headaches. They underlap, overlap and wriggle around everything.
Be very careful when you remove those as the plastic clip under the front can pull out of the rubber. Best bet is to remove the b-pillar trim, fold the rubber seal up so you can see the clip, then carefully prise the legs of it out with a thin screwdriver.

As Alan has said, you only really need to lift one side to access the ram connection, but it may prove easier to lift the whole thing to enable easier routing.
Plenty of old towels etc on the paintwork to protect it too!

Ok, so taking the roof out wasn't too bad, probably just the normal grumbles.

Now that I've eventually been able to try the new pump ( damaged hydraulic hose replaced) I have found a new problem.

The roof unlatches and starts to open, when the front of the roof is approx 70% open the drivers side stops at slightly different stages whilst the passenger side continues to open fully.

If I 'tap' the button rather than one solid press to open the roof it generally opens all of the way (although this is not ideal and quite jerky).

There are no issues closing the roof, it closes and latches every time.

Would you have any ideas what would cause an uneven opening of the roof?

Any help greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Paul

Well technically the fluid supply to both rams comes from the same pump port. If you haven't disturbed the rams then it shouldn't be them.
So it only leaves the possibility that the feed to the drivers side is being restricted, or that there is an airlock.
The system self bleeds so you could try helping it to move to see if it pushes any air through.
Also check that the reservoir is 'filled to spill'. Simply putting fluid in up to the '+' mark will not be enough if the pump is mounted at an angle.
Also mount the pump so that the unions are at the lowest side of the pump if you can, with the pump as close to vertical as is possible. (In reality it's usually close to 45 degrees)
It could also be the return pipe not feeding fluid back fast enough, so check both those pipes to the drivers side for kinks etc.

One other thing to check is that the bypass plunger isn't slightly depressed. It can happen when you relocate the motor as tension can be applied to the bowden cable. There is an adjuster in the cable, but the simplest check is to unbolt it from the pump and ensure the brass plunger is fully out.
