E86 radiator fan motor

What’s the problem with your fan?
They don’t tend to fail, it’s normally the wiring that rots going into the connector on top.

I bought a second hand fan and found this out the hard way. ( on top of two reputable independent garages not being able to fix it). I still have it taking up space in the garage.

I’ve already mentioned this, mechanic insists it’s the fan :?

I did the same. Bought a new fan on the advice of a mechanic. Turned out to be the loom (which was fixable as a DIY job). Was happy to have it sorted but lost £200 in the process.
 
I’m in Brighton if you wanted to test my spare fan.

It’s very common for the wiring to rot. There are three wires , power, ground and a control signal. Mine had both power and ground but the small control signal was dust - literally.
A new crimp from BMW for 70p an half an hour and all done.

Good luck on Monday. If it’s not the fan, tell the mechanic what we’ve said here. Not trying to be ‘told you so’ but I’ve been down this route myself.

With the engine on and the A/C on the fan should be moving (won’t be max speed but moving). This proves the fan is working AND the wiring is all intact. If it’s not moving, then it could be either the fan OR the wiring (or both).

I think there is some software that can check the fan signal but can’t remember the name.
 
I've been to see the mechanic and he has taken the radiator fan motor off. Says something has definitely gone inside it (one of the magnets?). He showed me and span the motor by hand which makes a loud clicking noise as it turns. It's times like this I wish I had a remote understanding of mechanical engineering...
Anyway, upshot is I'm definitely in the market for a replacement radiator fan motor so if anyone has one available or can point me to a good breaker, it would be very much appreciated.

Well that would seem to be that then.
But I'd suggest it would be well worth asking your mechanic to check those connections, and repair them if they look at all iffy.
May as well, while he's in there.
 
Ok yeah, that does sound like a motor issue. Hope your bloke didn’t take too much offence at you double checking! Very rare to see a fan pack failure and it not be the connector wiring or the loom (mine was actually broken down in the engine bay next to the washer fluid hose).

You made me happy though Paul :D .
It was the fan bushes/bearings/whatever went on mine so the fan started catching the housing.
Paul's unit that ended up with me didn't turn out to be quite the same fan unit and not able to do a direct swap ?? but was able to cannibalise its guts and my coupe lives on!
