E86 N52 Engine Support - Sketchy?

My little project continues to keep this 220k mile e86 on the road and next up is replacing the oil sump which has corroded through.

Steps I’m following are:
- support the engine from the top
- detach the engine mounts, steering, lower arms
- drop the front subframe enough to slide the sump out.

Having picked up the engine support second hand for £25 I’ve been trying to work out the best way to use it.
The challenge is that the engine mount doesn’t allign with any structural mounts and the support hook is too low.

Here’s my solution. Sketchiness marks out of ten?
Any recommendations on how to improve it!

You could use a hollow spacer under the cow horn adjustment to save spinning it all the way down?

It’s under a little tension in the photo and I’ve got a little more thread to play with.

I couldn’t find any photos of how people have done this with an E85/6. TIS has a similar setup (with a proper frame) but the anchor points are further back on the engine bay somewhere.

Not even slightly sketchy!

I like the cross brace; wouldn't have thought of that. I was worried about the mounts sliding down the wings until I realised that the engine can't move forward!

Ah yeah. I hadn’t thought of that!
I stood pondering it sliding and even made ridges in the wood profiling bolts etc to minimise movement. Never mind.. the chisel got a bit of use!

Top quality problem solving, just enough 'sketchiness' without being dangerous. Cross brace is good thinking.

I agree - not-so-pretty, but thoughtful and safe ! If your goal was to win the 'sketchiness' contest, I think your solution didn't make it past the qualifying rounds. :wink:
