E86 - MPG

Highest I've had with the e85 was about 41.1 mpg with the roof down.

Lowest about 22.5mpg.

The hatchback will be lower mpg due to the extra weight of the roof, the massive hatchback and the obligatory set of ladders for the window round.

My daily commute is about 9 miles along a mixture of 50/60mph roads and usually average 26/27 mpg. If I’m doing longer journeys on motorways and dual carriage ways I can get anything between 32-36mmpg

On my commute I have a clubman JCW and get 13-15mpg so its not the car its the fact the engine is cold and a short journey.

I’ve not reset the computer since I bought the car 5k ago. Indicated 31.3mpg mixed driving. Goes down a notch when cold running on a short journey and goes up on a Motorway run with cruise on. Strangely, a spirited Sunday drive on B roads doesn’t seem to affect it at all.

Best I ever managed was 42.5mpg on a long motorway run, these days about 39-40 on the motorway, although I have noticed that since the introduction of E10, mpg is worse in all cars and bikes by about 4-5mpg.

Mixed driving is around 28ish and town around 24 or so.

3.0si E86 manual.

I had my si coupe for over 3 years and did just over 30K miles in it averaging 32.5 mpg overall. Pretty mixed driving on motorways and in town, mostly commuting so lots of standing in traffic. The best I got was in the mid 40s on long motorway runs, lowest was mid-20s during some spirited driving. Pretty much always fuelled up with V-Power but on rare occasions where I didn't there was a clear hit on the mpg - maybe 5-10%

Put Super Unleaded in and see if you notice a difference.

E10 isn't in Super Unleaded yet.

I do plan to as a bit of an experiment, once I get round to it and can afford it

There are reports that the E10 is worse for economy and so far it does seem true (for me anyway).

I've only ever put Super Unleaded in mine for the past 7 years.

You could perhaps remortgage the house or sell a kidney and put a couple of tanks of Shell V-Power in the car. You'll notice the difference.

For anyone questioning the mpg computer accuracy, the answer is it should be very accurate.

I tracked the first 3k miles on my SI on both the computer and on a spreadsheet, resetting each fill up. Every tank was within 3%, with average variance of <0.1% over the time I was tracking. Clearly any odometer skew from tyre radius etc. would need to be added on top.

Average 32+ mixed driving. I used to see 40+ on long runs, but since E10, I have noticed a hit in both the E86 and Golf.

I use V-Power exclusively and going easy on motorway journeys will average 40+mpg comfortably.

Driven enthusiastically on B-roads I get around 25mpg.

I'm using v power and my mpg has been circa 17mpg for the past 3 months. I reset it every time I get in the car.

Short journeys only and aggressive acceleration and braking seems to help keep it as a steady 17mpg.

I've never seen higher than 25-27mpg on a motorway run from Glasgow to London and back.

That doesn't sound right, unless you do a lot of short trips sitting in traffic.

My 330i with the same N52 engine has averaged 30mpg since it had a new battery fitted 6 weeks ago. :)

I've done 7,500 miles in my E85 3.0si manual and averaged 36.3mpg but I never use it for short runs.
Easy to get over 40mpg at ~65mph on the motorway, best economy over a tank was 42.85mpg (brim to brim). I've been very impressed with the economy overall but you really notice it tanking on short journeys.
