E86 - MPG

Having had my E86 3.0 auto for 6 months I didn’t care about MPG (still don’t really..)
But I have noticed it doesn’t seems to change much or at all from 18.6 or 18.9 , daily commute is short 6 miles , weekend family visits 1 or 2 18 mile commutes I’m thinking this 18mpg is low on quick reads old posts which generally late 20s I know varying factors but still seems low 18s , it doesn’t fully matter as I love to drive it regardless :-)
Just interested what others getting ?

I would assume the reason for the low mpg is because not only is it a short commute but stop start too. I commute daily 15 miles there and back, and its pretty much a constant 50mph speed limit and I get 25mpg, it would be higher but I'm not always in the most economical mood.

Hmm that does seem a little low, do you just use the dash read out or do your own calcs based on how much fuel you filled up with and then what the trip says at the next fill up?

Dunno how reliable the dash MPG is...anyone? Pretty sure you can reset it (can't remember how) and see if that reads any different.

I regularly get 35/36mpg, that is mostly b road driving in south downs area and I am a throttle whisperer most of the time tbf, usually seeing 340 miles to a tank. If I "beans it" for a bit I go down to 25mpg which is the worst I've seen.

Best average I've had is 38mpg based on a 5day 25mile motorway commute at 70mph ish.

thanks for detailed info, interesting..ok purley been on dash display but my petrol light is on and will be filling which for this month work monitor and work it out..
I was just concerned a little reading others 20\30mpg + and seeing mine always 18 or so prompted this post. But more detailed analysis required 🧐

I think 6 mile journeys kill decent economy as the car is running a rich cold start mixture for a high percentage of the short trip

Short journeys AND it's an Auto would explain it imho. When ( :? ) the price of fuel comes down why not fill it up, reset the trip computer etc and go for a long, steady run on good open roads. I bet the mpg improves considerably

Easily get 35mpg+ on a longer run, and over 40mpg isn't hard on the motorway if you take it easy. Amazed me when we got it as I was worried about the fuel economy.

Seems to be about 25mpg the rest of the time around town.

My E86s have only ever been weekend/fun cars so never driven in rush hours or on busy roads, but what you are getting just highlights how thirsty a 3 litre auto is on a short - presumably stop/start - commute.

I'm a saddo who keeps a spreadsheet ( ) and over 8,000 miles my first one averaged 32mpg. Over 14,000 miles my second one averaged 34mpg - my MC is even managing 26mpg. :D

What Rob said.
And additionally, making such short regular journeys is just killing your engine slowly by not even giving it a chance to get up to operating temps let alone not giving it a decent run for any length of time. I suspect you will have an issue with the PCV at some point in the near future.
Pump your bike up ya lazy fekker.
:poke:

It’s been mentioned in a response already but have you reset the mpg computer/display? I know my N52 can read really low after say being in the garage for an MOT or something because they’re leaving it idling and revving it for omissions tests etc. it takes forever to reverse that reading via normal driving because of the average calculations but reset and it goes back up to somewhere close to 28/30 almost immediately.

hi, I thought resetting would be similar to resetting the mileage on dash, what’s the process for resetting the mpg ? Cheers

Hi.
to reset MPG, cycle through the display by pressing the button on the end of the stalk, once you see the MPG appear release the button, and then depress the button again and hold till you see it reset, then release the button and it should be good to go.

BTW i am averaging 36MPG doing 200 miles a week to and from home to work (Mon-Fri)

As per other's your mpg is most probably down to your daily commute which is quite short. Also resetting the trip commuter will help to give you a more accurate reading, (if you don't already do this).

Fuel can make a difference to mpg too - what do you put in?

For context, my Z4 3.0si Coupe used to do between 18mpg and 22mpg around town (depending how much beans I gave her) and used average between 28mpg and 32mpg on a run, using Shell V-Power.

[ref]rjhl64[/ref], beat me to it. You can try a few things like resetting on commute/run./hoon and see how it goes

If it makes you feel any better I’m sure we were down to single figures for large parts of last weekend

Lowest I've ever had was 15.8 mpg on a track day :?

Average for the Sunday, including cruise control at bang on speed limit from Hexam to Glasgow, 18.3

Steady journey on B roads in my E85 3.0 can do 42!
Even thrashing it rarely gets down into the teens
