E86 - Indicator Problem

I own a 07 E86 Coupe which has done 58,000 miles.

When indicating left (only) the indicators work fine initially and then start to flash rapidly after about 10 secs with the 'Bulb Out' indicator coming up on the Dashboard.

All the bulbs appear to be working fine and I have 'fiddled' with all the connections.

Searched the forum and can't find any similar issues, has anyone come across this before?

Any help appreciated.

the car checks bulbs cold and hot so you may have a bulb error but appears working, swap them with the right side one at a time to see which one is faulty.

Thanks mac27040 - Looks like I will be replacing all left hand bulbs.

Can anyone please recommend which bulbs / part numbers for the front, side & rear indicator bulbs?

Thanks,

Right I am going to tackle it this weekend, Fingers crossed!

Likely to be a stupid question but do the bulbs have to be orange or can you use clear bulbs?

Clear is fine, I split my headlights to de-ginger & removed the internal orange domes at the same time, thus needing amber lamps.

Most probably LED lamp resistor failure, this exactly happened to me at the MOT station this year! :headbang:

I replaced the lamps with normal units, never again am I using LED lamps in my Z'd! :D

I got these for my headlights (2 lamps are need per headlight!) : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121255699054

That's spectacularly unlucky timing Terry, I've got Philips LED sidelights and think they're great - granted they weren't cheap but having coded out the sidelight bulb checks no resistors are needed, I didn't want those as the idea was to reduce power consumption.

Update - I have replaced all indicator bulbs on the left hand side but unfortunately the indicator warning light is still coming on when I signal left.

There appears to me no rhythm as to when the 'failure' happens but I am lost at what to do next.

Any ideas welcome!

It sounds to me like a poor connection in the wire, bulb holder, etc.

Light works fine to start, but due to poor connection the heat and resistance increases until the light stops working and gives a bulb out. Let it cool and cycle repeats.

Just need to check all the connections and loom (or diagnosis for code)

I had thought it might be a connection but when the indictor warning light comes on and the double speed blinking starts all the bulbs are still flashing i.e none of the bulbs look to have blown / over heated.

I have done some research on other BMW's and it would appear that it is a common fault in E90's. Apparently it can be a faulty light module.

Anyone know when the light module is located?

The LCM is in fact the light switch to the right of the column. Far from being a switch, it's got a great long module on the back of it.

I'm on hols so can't look up if it controls indicators, but would hazard a good guess it does since if a bulb blows them it pits the indicators on static & constantly.
