E86 Handbrake Lock on?

Hi Guys.

I'm a new member and an owner of a Z4M Coupe. I've owned the car for 6 months and have enjoyed every minute of driving.

However, I have an issue thats come up this weekend. I went for a drive on Friday and returned home. I jet washed the car and cleaned it. then put it in the garage. I went to go for a drive this afternoon in the glorious sunshine, started her up and went to pull out of the garage but she wouldn't move. Put her into gear and went to pull out of the garage, but she just hunkered down on the back wheels. Put her into reverse and she raised up at the back. I always leave the handbrake off when in the garage after a wash, so that the pads don't potentially stick to the disks. Any ideas what the issue might be? Thanks, in advance.

I get exactly the same thing, you need to be sure you wash the soap of properly as it sticks the brakes...make sure you properly rinse with plenty of water. After washing take it for a quick drive around the block and you'll be fine.

whatever you do, when you wash this car they brakes must be used before its put away , i always going for a quick drive around the block to get some heat in them and dry them with gentle applications. i also store the car handbrake off , in gear with the wheels stopped by bricks.

These two above are completely correct - go for a run once it's washed. My discs go rusty shortly after washing (like half an hour after - whilst I'm doing the bodywork) so it helps clean that off too - quick 15 mins down the road should do it.

They have an internal drum inside the disc these are prone to filling up with brake dust and rust off the disc

Whip the rear discs off and blast with brake cleaner... also check rear calipers for a sticking piston and the sliders are well greased.

Thanks Guys for the replies.

The disks are free and don't stick. I can move the car about a centimetre back and forth and the disks are rotating.

Since posting this, I have been talking to an ex BMW mechanic who has told me that the drum handbrake has shoes that are glued in position and sometimes the shoes come away and jam. He's coming round on Thursday night to have a look, so will update when I know more. Thanks again.

Just give it a blast with the pressure washer and it'll free up...honestly don't go to the hassle of getting a mechanic round.

This, no need to get it checked.

If it's moving a CM back and forth, it will be the shoes either binding, or one will have fallen apart and the broken piece of lining has become wedged against the drum. If it was the pads stuck to the disc, you wouldn't get this bit of movement.

If they are just stuck to the inside of the drum, a few taps on the hub with a copper or dead shock mallet will probably free them, do this with the handbrake off. If it's a broken lining, it'll need to come apart for new shoes anyway.

Get your calipers refurbed. They been doing the same job for 10 years. If they are seizing on a drive, efficiency out on the road is also going to be poor

Hi All,

Yep, you were right. The pads had locked onto the rear disks. Everything is fine now. Thanks for the replies. :)

I've never had a problem with this on any other car - are these cars more prone to this?

I had my car washed - drove it round the block as I'd read this thread previously - it was parked for 2 days. Went to get in it yesterday - and the same problem as described here.

probably something to do with the pad material used, FWIW my AP racing setup does the same, i make sure the brakes have been used and very warm after a wash
