E86 Decats?

Hey everyone,

Now I have done a lot of searching & struggling to find some decat pipes. I am wanting my car louder (already has a custom exhaust which cane with the car)

anyone know of any? My last resort is taking it to a fabricator & having some made.

Thanks in advance

the cats are part of the manifold so would mean new manifolds... not aware of anywhere that do them but that doesn't mean they aren't available!

What's your custom system like? Mines almost straight through apart from cats and it's pretty damn loud

Its a full custom straight piped with that cats. ive taken out the foam from the pipes but still not loud enough as i love extremely loud cars coming from the jap scene. i may look at a manifold :D

Have a search on Zpost a lot of Americans have looked into it but for new headers you’re looking at around 1-2g if I remember correctly. Maybe worth getting a exhaust specialist to fabricate you a pair?

Having been woken a number of times by 'extremely loud cars' driving in a residential area in the early hours, I am hopeful that the new MOT rules will put a stop to a lot of this as an excessively loud exhaust is now an automatic fail

Extracted from the new MOT rules

Nuisance (8) (Previously MOT Test of Exhaust and Emissions)

The May 2018 revision of the MOT Testing Manual groups exhaust emissions with noise and fluid emissions under the new heading of ‘Nuisance’.

Noise suppression system

The Tester will inspect: exhaust silencers

Exhaust noise will be assessed during the emissions test for the vehicle or by revving the engine to around 2,500rpm or half the maximum engine speed if this is lower on vehicles not subject to an emissions test

Exhaust noise from the vehicle must not be unreasonably above the noise level normally expected from a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition.

The following categories apply to defects in this section:

Defect (Category)
Exhaust noise levels in excess of those permitted (Major)

Anyone else think the quoted text from the tester's manual is a bit vague?

The manual says that the testers must 'use your judgement to assess exhaust noise'

I extracted the text from a simplified version but you can find the full MOT manual section at https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/documents/manuals/class3457/Section-8-Nuisance.html#section_8.1

Well I’ve had loud cars all the time & illegal mods & my mate who owns his garage passes it for me :D

Thanks mr tourette

"custom exhaust " can be many things :? has the centre silencer been removed ?

think mike dlv gutted his.. might be worth having a chat with him

I did, however mine is an E85, and they have two sets of cats. The "normal" pair at the manifold, which are monitored by the O2 sensors etc, and a secondary set further down which aren't. I gutted the secondaries, which gave me a massive improvement in throttle response as they were so restrictive, and more "snarl" from my system, which has one of my modded OEM backboxes fitted.

E86's DON'T have secondary cats, they have a pair of silencers in there. Removal of these would, I think be a fail under the new rules, as any parts fitted from the factory should still be present, at least that's my interpretation of the rules.

My car still has the "cats" fitted, but as Steve pointed out, they are empty inside.

Isn't having "cats" that have been gutted now a fail on MOT also Mike ? :?

MOT isn’t a issue with me as I take it to my mates garage who passes it for me on the exhaust emissions & loudness

No, because visually they are still there. Emissions wise, the primaries and their closed loop monitoring more than meet euro standards. I believe the secondaries were added for US/Canadian markets where the limits are lower.

Mine has passed two mot's without a problem.

Not sure if I should resurrect this post or start over…

My question is simple really, has anyone installed the aftermarket decay systems available from Gravity and others and if so, what are they like/are they worth it?
