Evening All,

I currently have an E86 Z4 that I have spent a small fortune on getting just right.

The car now performs flawlessly and the majority of suspension components have been replaced and upgraded at the same time.

My issue being a local garage to me have just advertised a M135i that has a particularly good specification and it’s tempting to me to trade in the E86.

Has anyone on here for any previous experience with the M135i in comparison to the E86?

Any advice would be appreciated.

No advice other than is a private sale not better financially? I have checked we buy any car as a guide and 2007 z4 coupes around 7.5k my abarth 10.5k so a garage I chatted to about a deal happy to give me 10.5k but still want over 10k for their 2007 coupe ... I’m no expert but

I would probably list privately but they are a performance dealer so are actually quite keen on the E86 but I haven’t even got to figures yet because every time I look out the window I question my thoughts as it looks so good! My only issue is the lack of rear seats, which is fine because I have another car but it’s far more boring that then E86 now making me question a 5 seater fun car purchase...

private sale has to be the way, when you have money you have more power. It’s all well and good going into a dealers dropping off your car and driving off in the new one but financially no way....just think a bit of patience and you could end up with what you want and 2k-3k in your pocket ....that’s nice in any language

I went from an E86 to a new m135i back in 2014 both manuals.Have still got the 1 series on low miles . Main difference for me was more practical (3door ) quicker car . Miss the N.A throttle response & car felt more special .The E86 being a sports car is a totally different car to drive though.Depends if you are ready to go from that to a competent sports hatch .

Two different cars so comparisons would be hard. Have you driven a M135i? Ultimately you may love it, or it could be quite the opposite, I would imagine most people on the forum will say keep your Coupe 😄

It may not be important but I would imagine you would lose more money on the M135i in depreciation, as the Coupes seem to be increasing steadily.

I was initially going to buy an M135i but decided the E85 was a better option - not a fan of turbos (excuse the pun). Stay away from the N54 variant.

I think the starting point would be to have a test drive in the M135i - that may make your mind up for you!

But if you still fancy it after that some research on potential issues they can have would be time well spent.

They are one of these best of the past best of the future type modern cars. Straight 6 300+ hp practical etc they make quick work of pretty much anything you throw at them. There’s isn’t much on the road for the money that’s 4.6ish to 60 can do 40+ mpg with the family in tow. Find one with an LSD and they will embarrass pretty much anything, add a remap silly numbers are available.

That’s the issue for me, they have sort of become the Vauxhall nova of this generation there are thousands of them loads owned by young kids and modified to high hell because they are a great platform and cheap and so many are always barking at my heels in the Z4M… don’t really like being tied to that crowd tbh

I bought a clubman JCW for a daily instead because I like minis and that car has loads more room and is really quick too and very marmite love them or hate them but you rarely see them, I prefer cars that are a bit more quirky and rare.

As a weekender it just doesn’t cut it for me they don’t have much soul especially compared to an e86. Like I said these modern nods to the oldschool a bit like the 718 gts it’s slower than the 4 cylinder S variants but has the old school feel and they charge another 20k… I would rather just buy the old ones…

The other thing I don’t like about the 1-2 series are the interiors they feel a bit budget imo

Depends what you need it for really like I said there’s not much to dislike and if you can get away from the image they portray then there’s not much on the road that offer that level of practicality and speed.

That being said I wouldn’t want to daily an E86 or E85 either so for a comfort and technology point of view for a daily the e85/6 don’t hold a candle but like I said the Z4 has far more personality and soul.

Another potential option is a MK3 Megane RS, I’ve been reading a lot of reviews and with a stage 1 remap they clear 300bhp and with the cup pack and recaro seats they are supposed to be a very capable bit of kit.

The E86 itself I love to pieces and that straight 6 sound is fantastic I am just struggling to work with the 2 seats, I keep getting caught in situations where I could just do with that extra seat to take a friend somewhere or pick someone up and the Z4 isn’t even my daily driver!
