E86 Centre Console Trim Removal

I've been reading up on how to remove the centre console aluminium trim (part 1 below) but there is one thing that I am unclear of.
Do you need to remove the whole centre console to get to it (parts 2 and 3 below )? It shouldn't be because part 2 is separate to the rear centre console it seems.
I hope not as from what I can find it seems that getting the storage lid out is a major PITA.

Does anyone have a link to a clear step-by-step guide? All I can find are bits and pieces and not the start to finish guide.
 
Yes you have to remove the centre console from the car as the trim is screwed to the underside of it (by about 35 screws!)

To take the centre console out, you also need yo loosen the rear one.

This, from memory its 30 screws.

Indeed. Was just hoping there was no need to take out both parts :(
One question about the photos in that guide though, he just pulls the lid off (see photo below) but he has no phone kit installed, can you still pull it out the same way if you do have it?

And the leather knee pads? Do they come out in a special way or just use the plastic pry tools on them to pop them out?

Taking out the phone cradle is fine but does the door flap just yank out after that? Or is it held in place by more screws than the non phone version?
According to the TIS guide you need to slide in some wire or something.
 
Could do with a step by step guide.
Mine is broken and need to replace the surround.
Anyone got an old surround they don't need anymore? Need one with one hole for the sport button..

The flap just pulls off after removing the two screws in the hinges. The angle needs to as the picture above iirc. It does require some effort.

I had this problem too - if you have Bluetooth, it is near impossible to reach the 2 hinge screws. The cover doesn't just pull off. I had to find a really long thin screwdriver and vey slowly undo the screws at an angle. It took about an hour! There may be a better way but I couldn't figure it out.
