E86 ABS / DTC Warning Lights On

Hi All

I am a new member and proud owner of an 07 montego blue 3.0 si sport coupe in Suffolk and after having the car a week I am getting the above warning lights on along with the handbrake / brake warning light. The lights came on last Sunday when I came around a corner and gave it some " beans " etc. So I stopped the car, turned it off then back on - they were on for a few seconds then went out. I gave the car a bit more another one time and they didn't come back on. Next day I fired the car up and they were back however once I drove down the road and probably got upto 30 mph they went out. I have taken the car out another couple of times and its been fine until I attacked a corner with a bit more aggression and they are back again! Have fired the car up today but not yet driven it and they are still on. The 4th owner of the car had the module / unit rebuilt etc so I am hoping its maybe just a sensor perhaps or crappy connection?

Now I have a couple of questions:

When everyone refers to the module or unit are they talking about the ABS pump under the bonnet or is this another ECU that controls said braking and traction etc?

Is it fairly easy to remove and check the wheel sensors? I did watch a quick vid and didn't look too bad....

I have a foseal OBD reader which links upto the car but is saying there are no fault codes - do I need a better reader do you think?

Apart from this annoying glitch I absolutely love this thing - its bloody addictive! The sound, looks and general styling inside and out - it is truly awesome. Even driving it at fairly low speeds but in a spirited fashion it just feels so damn on the ball - handling etc. I also love the notchy gearshift and am glad I went for a manual car.

Many thanks in advance for some advice!

Andy

If those lights have come on it should have set code(s) as your reader isn't showing any codes then best try another reader known to work with BMW. From your description on when the lights appear with spirited cornering I would suspect something wrong with one of the abs/speed sensors in one of the wheel hubs. A good code reader should identyfy which one it is, BMW INPA can do this, check out the condition of the recultor ring in the hub for any rust build up, that could be the cause of the issue if it isn't the sensor. Clean the ring off if it looks dirty/rusty.

[ref]andyrich1512[/ref], whereabouts in Suffolk? I'm in Attleborough and have a code reader that I know will diagnose ABS sensors etc, as it did just that for me on wifey's E85 recently. Happy to help out if I can.

All I would add is that when the ABS sensor failed on ours, it put up the tyre pressure light too, as it uses that sensor to detect a low pressure, using rolling radius calculation.

Thanks for the replies and the offer of help enuff zed! Well I have just taken to it out to get some fuel and by the time I pulled out of the car park and down to the bottom of our road the lights went out so I shall try and source a better quality reader and keep an eye on it. As I say the pump / module was rebuilt / repaired 16000 miles ago so I am hoping it is a sensor / ring issue somewhere. I have noticed some folk on here use the foxwell 510 reader? does that sound about right and is it any good?

I'm guessing its a good investment when owning any modern classic as these things will pop up now and again!

Thanks again!

No worries. If you're up this way I don't mind checking any time.
Other readers to consider are the Creator 310(?) and the Autophix5900 which I have and suits my limited ability: ie. it tells me in pretty plain English what is wrong.

[ref]andyrich1512[/ref], just remembered you're in Ipswich. I am mostly working from home right now, but on Tuesday's I go in to work at Timberwolf, in Stowmarket, so if at any time you need any help with codes etc maybe we could arrange to meet then?

enuff zed - I think I have done a couple of jobs at that Timberwolf place before in Stowmarket but next couple of days I am working in Milton Keynes - I basically install cctv / safety systmes onto mainky HGV's etc.

OK I will have a look at the other systems you have recommended and take the plunge and get one - the fault is bound to crop up again so it makes sense to just get one really!

Thanks again - Andy.

I would guess it is the brushes on the ABS pump sticking as you are probably asking for momentary intervention from the DSC when gunning it which spins the pump up. If the pump was previously refurbed by ECU Testing, they give a lifetime warranty so happy days.

Could be a speed sensor on the wheel too but as mentioned above, that usually also brings on the tyre pressure warning light too.
