E86 3.0si Water Pump - Best Replacement Available?

Hi All,

I am soon going to be replacing the water pump on my E86 3.0si, and just wondered if there are better quality replacement water pumps available that would be worth fitting?

I understand the original BMW items have a tendency to fail, but are there improved non-OEM pumps on the market that are better quality / more reliable?

Any advice you can offer would be appreciated

Cheers,

Search on eBay from EU location and you can get the original BMW spec pump made by Pierburg for around £240. No need to look at alternatives IMO at that price, as you can be sure anything cheaper will originate from further afield and is unlikely to last as long as the BMW original.

As above!

I swapped mine for a Pierburg one from Germany, was exactly the same as the one that come off. :driving:

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Most appreciated.
A Pierburg replacement pump it is then :D

Any idea on the labour cost to get the pump changed at an independent garage?

Can anyone tell me if this is the correct Pierburg pump needed for my 3.0si E86 please?

Many thanks in advance.

That sounds like the right one.

You should get new bolt(s) to attach it to the engine as the originals are single use. Don’t think there are any gaskets as such to worry about as the connections to the pump are by hoses - you might need therefore to get some new jubilee clips. It’s not a bad idea to replace the thermostat at the same time, even the radiator header tank too whilst the coolant system is disturbed. I’ve got a pile of bits building up waiting to do mine!

I'm in the same boat, I have one ready to go on. On that list of things to do.

I'm pretty sure I've seen your coupe around. I drive down the 339 everyday heading home.

Thanks Chris. Which bolts are needed? Any links to these to buy them?

The bolts are not generic & have to be ally so as to not cause a bimetallic reaction with the magnesium engine case, they seem to be included with some of the replacement pumps

Realoem is your friend for part numbers:

You may need to order the bolts from BMW.

Thanks for all the very helpful replies. Most appreciated.

One last question - Is it advisable to replace the thermostat at the same time as the water pump? Or are the thermostats pretty reliable and unlikely to fail?

Many thanks,

Personally I would only be thinking about changing the stat if coming up to 100,000 miles. I've never heard of one failing.

I'm pretty sure that you have to remove the pump to replace the stat, if so then just change it at the same time.

Assuming that's the case that would explain why my BMW specialist recommended doing the thermostat when he did the pump! (Mine had only done 60K miles, but was 10 years old).
