It was great to meet you today, I only joined the dots as I saw your number plate driving away! Lovey to meet you and follow your journey of development of the E86, it looked fabulous in the flesh.

Thanks David, loved the wheel and colour combo on yours! hope you enjoy the steering wheel!

Following this thread with interest, starting to do a few more OEM style mods on my car so good to see a project thread for ideas. Where did you get your mini numberplates made up?

JDM plates did mine, fully recommend them, I actually went for a bigger plate on the back on his recommendation so it didn't look too small in the aperture, but the plate sizes really depend on your plate, when buying mine i deliberately bought one with two 1's as a pair of ones can be counted as a single digit, i.e. my plate can be legally sized as a 5 digit plate despite having 6 characters

So exciting couple of days for the z project
oj1Oc3E.jpg
picked up my new wheels from the wheel specialist, they did an awesome job on the refurb, so i fully ceramic sealed them awaiting...

Tyres, got a really good black friday deal on a set of 234/40/18 michelin pilot sport 4, really happy with the fitment, more tyre than standard so should add a little ride comfort too, also pictured 2 sets of spacers (one AC schnitzer one standard mtec, both 20mm) and a set of extended bolts
so first try wheel without spacer
PqtTn0o.jpg
too far into the arch, also very little clearance to the strut, next attempt...

gUj4ixp.jpg
20mm gives too much poke sticking out... to the lathe!
StSZxo1.jpg
took 3mm off the schnitzer spacers giving a 17mm spacer
dK0BXZe.jpg
FoxyLLh.jpg
better!
next for the rears, forgot to take a picture with no spacer but the wheel was definitely too far in, then fitted the 20mm spacer...
jTH9jk2.jpg
as suspected too much poke...back to the lathe!
HX58c6X.jpg
with these ones i turned them down to a 14mm spacer and turned the 82mm ac schnitzer sized spigot onto them removing the need for a spigot ring
546iDcO.jpg
and that is as far as i got today, i may yet take another mm or 2 from the rear as i'm not completely happy with them

Ended up sticking with the 14mm spacers on the rear as when i added a bit of weight to the rear it sat down nicely, can always take a bit more off at a later date. This is the finished result

Really happy! although on the short trip out of the shed to look at it in the daylight there appears to be a metallic rotational noise, i have checked clearances and it isn't wheels or tyres, at this stage initial thoughts are maybe a wheel stud that is a fraction too long that is just kissing something? pulled a wheel stud from each wheel and no evidence of any rubbing so further investigation required (and some new tips for the lathe)
in the mean time, more polishing, further evidence here of previous owners love of the gritty sponge

Wow that is some garage you've got there OP, and some useful kit inside it!

Your car looks great on those AC Schnitzer wheels - it's good to see something totally different.

 Looking like a great project. See what you mean about lathe adjustments to those spacers now

Thanks Mr Tidy, i like that the wheels are a bit different, haggisman on here also runs a set on his e85, I have have a accumulated a few handy tools over the years but it nice to actually use them!!

Yes a picture paints 1000 words!

So i found the problem regards the rubbing noise...

p3Keucg.jpg

It seems 45mm wheel studs were JUST too long (not even all of them were touching!) weirdly only rubbing on one side too! all now have had a couple of mm removed and no more problems!

Then got on with a bit more polishing, happy with how its coming up, the top of the rear wing was almost flat, and certainly no reflections before i started. takes forever though!

small update but some black grilles i ordered turned up, fitted them up

Not sure how i feel about these...any thoughts?

IMO think I prefer the grey. Black always look like it’s had the teeth knocked out of it

I'm glad someone does!

I think the paint colour has a bearing - I much preferred black on my Montego Blue car.

But my current one came with all black grilles that I think look even better!

Totally agree. Paint colour makes a huge difference, as does the ‘surround’ colour too (black vs chrome).
(Your MC looks stunning btw)

Im not sure i can unsee that now  jury is very much out though need to see it outside in the daylight to make a proper decision!

That looks incredible!! i always thought the all black was a bit much although it looks fantastic on yours, i wonder if the extra black there seems to be on the M front bumper makes them stick out less?

I think you’re right. The black cavities of the front fang intakes keeps it really balanced.

so been working through the Christmas break trying to get polishing/detailing on the car done, can't believe how bad the paint looked under artificial light and how hard the paint is! ended up using menzerna heavy cut compound on microfibre pads, but starting to get there! before i started used some ironx at the wash stage, scary how much iron ends up in your paint!

on with the polishing, the front wing was the worst of it with all the swirl marks, santa bought some extra lighting and some ceramic coating which i am looking forward to applying!

AqjRMJ9.jpg
because the artificial light i had before just wasn't savage enough!

hVlw3rV.jpg
difficult to see here but there is a bit of a before and after looks way more of a difference to the eye!

finally done with the polishing!

After this it got a full coat of gtecniq crystal serum light and then two coats so EXOv4

Happy with the beading from the rain, and the sheeting when you tip water on it is crazy!

also bought a front lip:

vQPmQBO.jpg
t54OQyp.jpg

not sure, obviously not painted yet, my sell it on as i think ground clearance is more of an issue than i thought

Other things to sort after doing a few miles with the new wheels and tyres: i am happy, the turn in is sharper, there is a more pronounced wandering feeling around dead centre on the steering it was there before but maybe a little more noticeable maybe alignment?

there is a tiny bit of rubbing only when pressing on and with compressions in the road at the front, maybe needs a little more taken off of the spacers (maybe a couple of mm) as it is only just rubbing

my decisions re suspension have been made a little easier when i scraped the bottom of the front bumper on the local level crossing and also with the slight scraping on the arches. so looking like suplex springs and bilstien b6s are likely the way i am going to go.

Is it not possible to draw a line around the bumper on the lip, cut it at that then fix to the bumper from the inside (missing the headlamp washer hoses ) ? You would get the look without reducing ground clearance :idunno:

Good work, love the Schnitzer wheels, they look way nicer than the 189s. One of the best best colours BMW have ever made aswell looks awsome in different shades of light.

Any tips on first time DA? still waiting to take the plunge and get one!

Hadn't thought of this! think i would want to try it on a "spare" bumper if i was going to do anything like that though!

Thanks! yeh the 189's were just a temporary solution, typically the schnitzers came up about 3 weeks after getting them fitted up! still getting my head around the colour its almost like a flip paint, but isn't!

Da was a great investment i got a DAS6, seems fine the choice of pads is the most important bit followed by compound, i found the bmw wanted an aggressive compound and i ended up using microfibre pads for cutting and polished it in 4 stages, my mates porsche by contrast didn't need any more than the second least aggressive compound i was using on the bmw!

small update, i put the rear spacers (14mm) on the front and the fronts (17mm) on the rear to see if that solves the rubbing... aaannd the wheel bolts are too long :headbang:

ordered some more and they have shown up so will try them when i get a chance see if that little bit extra clearance is enough

over the weekend i did a full interior detail and thats looking great, phone died so no pictures of that unfortunately although its probably difficult to tell with a camera! some of the aluminium trim is a little beaten up, so potentially on the lookout for another set...also have an idea for a different look on the old set if i do sort it...

Also took the rear exhaust tips off to clean them up and they were pretty pitted so want to replace them too now!

lockdown and some poor weather has given me more inside time to have a think about and have a look at what other bits i want to do...

suspension as above probably want to go suplex and bilstien b6, also decided whilst in there want to rebush the rear end, then the front and rear will be fresh! and then get a full alignment done

im going to sell the front lip, will be listed up here at some point looked at Jl-c's suggestion but really to be comfortable doing that i would want another bumper, by the time i buy another bumper cut it up fit the lip have it painted it wouldn't be significantly more to get an M bumper which i think is the nicest solution to the lack of sportiness i find in the front bumper.

ultimately i would like to find an ac schnitzer rear lip, they are seemingly discontinued, shmeidmann list them for something like £750...i don't like them that much! if other ac schnitzer stuff is anything to go buy it should be significantly cheaper second hand...if i can find one!

ultimately then an exhaust and a strut brace and i think that will do for bolt on stuff! does anyone know if an e46 strut brace fits?
