E86 2.5 power/stats

So... been looking at 2.5 facelift sport models for a while now... budget £5k, under 100k miles.

From looking at the stats, some are 177bhp, and other 218bhp. Does anyone know why this is? Would obviously prefer the 218bhp model! Is it just an error on autotrader?

Thanks in advance!

Think you'll have trouble finding an e86 with a 2.5, if memory serves me correctly they are all 3.0 si 261bhp and finding one for under 5K will mean it will be a shed on wheels!

The e85 vert has a 2.0, 2.2, 2.5 and 3.0. If you have set your mind on a 2.5, the early m54 pre-facelift has around 190 bhp, 5-speed box. As enzed4 stated, the facelift has two flavours 177/218 + a 6-speed box and a lighter engine due to the aluminium being alloyed with magnesium. Despite lower bhp and torque, it gives identical performance to the pre-facelift.

As far as I am aware (someone correct me if I'm wrong) the facelift 177/218bhp N52 engine is identical with the increase in power due to a 3 stage manifold and software tuning. You could, in theory, get a 177bhp and fit a 3 stage manifold (wiring already in place just blanked off), loads of manifolds on fleabay due to it being used on e46's and then have a remap. This would cost about £50-£100 for the manifold and £250 for a remap + you would need to be ok with a set of spanners. A good tuner may be able to squeeze a few more horses out of the engine, if you fitted a more free-flowing exhaust system I don't see why 225-230bhp is not achievable, so could be a cheaper way into si performance +.

If you can't find a decent 218bhp at the right price a 177bhp could also be remapped without changing the inlet manifold, this will bring it up to around 193bhp (according to all the remap websites) and again with a decent exhaust should see around 200bhp. Won't be as quite as quick as an Si but unless you are tracking it I doubt you would be able to tell much difference.

Avoid fitting a K+N unless you want to ruin the engine and reduce horsepower.

Cracking info, thanks very much. That makes sense now... e85 facelift 2.5si sport it is then!!! If anyone has one they want to shift, let me know. I’m struggling to find any near Bristol :(

I've got a facelift 2.5i sport. I went in with my eyes wide open this time after buying one a couple of years ago and realising it wouldn't pull you out of bed  they ain't quick.

I had mine remapped at promap Cheshire to 197 but it still felt limp so sold up n got a coupe.
This time though I appreciate it for what it is, it's a mint example which is just a weekend car so the lack of power doesn't bother me. Defo hold out for an SI

There aren't that many about, you will have to travel! Two examples:-

Ignore the asking price.......haggle hard!

That one with the extended caramel leather is a lovely unique car.
That's the one I would travel for, the extended leather looks to be in really good nick and Monaco blue is a really classy colour.......I am biased though!

Because they're sucking hot air in the engine bay? Or is there another reason? Don't want to hijack this thread, feel free to pm me if you want to discuss, as my E89 came with 2 pod filters I'm not thrilled about, but not sure what to do with them.

Back in 2006 I bought a new rx8 and was an active member of the owners club. One fellow owner was an aerodynamicist who ran a series of tests at work comparing a standard paper filter with the k&n. I can't remember the specifics, the thread should be still on the rx8 forum, there was a very slight increase in flow over the paper filter, 0.6% if I remember correctly but a marked reduction after cleaning the filter and re-oiling using k&n spray oil. The main concern was the fact that the k&n did not filter micro particles any where near as good as the paper filter. He concluded that the k&n was ok when new, poor when cleaned and oiled because it was too difficult to know if you had enough or too much oil, either reducing flow or allowing larger particles through due to lack of oil. The paper filter was very efficient and was excellent at particle filtration. Once he published the data a lot of rx8 k&n's went onto fleabay....mine included!

Yeah I do like the look of the caramel leather one but it’s actually an SE? Bit confusing tbh as it looks like it’s just had the sports seats upgrade... also no bum warmers  would it also have the m suspension?

What do we think of the price on this? Looks tidy but a bit strong?

I just found a great car on Auto Trader:

Not surprised, extended leather is not very common. The other one with black and red interior looks good, if you like that colour combo go and have a butchers!

This one has been discussed at length on the forum with a thread in the for sale section, bit more than your budget but just look at that interior :driving:

Just a thought OP, but you might want to also consider a 3.0Si if you find any in budget.

Running costs are pretty much the same but you get some more bhp, which can only be a good thing!

The reason I say that is that I bought an E91 325i as a daily last year, and am in the throes of replacing it with an E90 330i.
