E85 Z4 Power Steering Motor

I am still procrastinating whether to move forward with my hydraulic steering conversion or just replace the power steering motor (which has been confirmed as unrepairable). For the hydraulic conversion I have collected nearly all the required components but I am tempted for a quick short term solution to just replace the motor (1/2 days work) just the get the car back on the road for the summer.

My key question is - can you just replace the motor or do they need need to be electrically paired to the cars ECU ( ie do I need a BMW Dealer involvement)

Just bolt it in. Done it a couple of times.
May need a tweak on the ring for sticky steering but apart from that you should be fine.

enuff-zed, thanks for your quick response. If no special ECU programming is required because it is a replacement motor I will probably risk a used unit just to get it back on the road

Exactly what I did to help someone out. In that case I leant him a motor to keep the car usable while he waited for his to come back from ecu testing. Ended up using it for his daily commute for two weeks with no problems at all

Just heard back from the Seller of the motor I have found on ebay, he is also doing an E85 hydraulic conversion (hence reason for sale of the motor) but warned me I would need to re-code the ECU to fit his motor to my car. Your recent threads said you did not need to do this and that the motor you fitted work without this coding procedure, can you confirm that this was definitely the case in the motor you fitted, the Seller may just have got the wrong end of the stick and was just being cautious about the sale.

Many thanks for the confirmation, have just sent off for the motor so will do another installation hopefully for the last time until I can get on with the conversion. Frustrating as I have all the bits now, just not the time to get it done before summer disappears. At least the re-electrification of the steering will give me a few months of summer time.

Is the motor really necessary? I’ve driven with a faulty EPS (removed) and was fine. Easy even.

R50 and E46 seemed like harder… but maybe I’ve just gotten used to poor EPS. Happened in the E90 as well.
