E85 Z4 M Bumper on 3.0L

Hi all, just picked myself up a 2004 E85 3.0L this weekend to have some fun with over the summer, im planning on doing a few mods, such as a new exhaust system, induction and nitrous. However, I have been offered a E85 Z4 M Bumper which has a cutout for a twin exhaust each side of the bumper, as mine only has the passenger side cutout i thought this could be great to install and have dual pipes either side of the car.

I did this on a old mondeo once, and it was a straight forward bumper swap and trip down the the exhaust fellas who piped both sides up. I was wondering if 1. the bumper will be a straight swap from the Z4M to the 3.0 E85 ??? and 2. is there going to be any obstacles under the car that would restrict a second back box such as battery, spare wheel space ? not had a chance to look under her yet but wondered if anybody else has done this or given it any thought ?

M bumper are from e86 (facelift) you also need e86 tail lights because old(e85) light are different shape, prepare to spend another £150-200

im told the bumper was form a E85 Z4M.......... im assuming this one that they featured on 5th gear, do stop me if im wrong, i have only owned it for 1 day and my knowledge around the Z is very limited !

So, i will need the tail lights off the car as well as the bumper from the Z4M (E85 i assume)

any ideas about putting another backbox on the other side, is there any obsitacles on the driver side to restrice pipes, secondry silencer ?

E85 is a roadster whereas e86 is a coupe.
Coupe was introduced during a facelift, so there is no such thing as pre facelift coupe, but e85 roadster can be pre or post facelift.
Z4m was also introduced with the facelift.
Body panels and lights are a bit different between pre and postfacelifts.
So while changing your rear bumper to M version you have to swap rear lights also (assuming you have a pre-facelift z4).

bugger !! well im not 100% can you tell me how i knof is this is pre facelift ? im assuming it is as it has amber in the front headlamps, in my X5 2004 face lift all indicators went clear ?

There's a quad exhaust topic, a few M bumper topics etc using the search function 8)

Just to confirm, in that video, the car is a facelift, the obvious way to tell is that the prefacelift rear lights have a small circle inside a bigger ring, facelift have most noticeably a flowing bottom

Ah right, appreciate all the feedback, dam you boys are fast on here !!! on other forums i have been on over the years i wait a few days for a few replys, yet got all the info within a hour and bottle of red !!! awesome !

well i will try source the bumper and lights with a view of a full custom exhaust !! i will keep you all posted with the results
thanks again guys, really impressive !

Swapping the tail lights is not that easy either... I have been looking into it as well and changed my mind. Kept my bumper with diffuser and cutout for the quad exhaust with only 1 silencer (as said by Jonny, battery in the way)

And u wont be able to run two exhaust boxes from your 3L because unlike the M where the battery is moved to the center to allow this on the non M's the battery is to the right thus not being able to have the two, so only one exhaust box with the second tail pipe running from this, just ensure the second exhaust pipe is curved as it runs from primary exhaust box as any angles will reduce air flow like some cowboys make that mistake, Remus do a good exhaust box and Eislemann do a great exhaust system but pricey!

Not entirely true. I fitted full dual system with OEM ///M back ones. Just had to remove the charcoal filter. Slim the battery down and fit a race battery instead. Bit more work but the most elegant and pure solution.

Full thread on it on the forum.

I have the full write up for the face lift lights installment and even the new programme via your zeds CPU to change power from 6V to 12v and eradicate the so called "T" effect if your need it!
Took me ages to collate!

have you posted a how to? Could be useful for a lot of people!

Or you could keep the old rear lights and mod the M bumper to have the same profile around the bottom edge of the rear lights.
Look for pictures of the rear of a pre 2005 car and compare it to a post 2005 car.

Each to their own of course but other than visual appearance it would seem quite a bit of work to add an extra box/ pipe work to the car , with the added weight & poss exhaust restriction . M box's do look rather bulky ( helped if painted black though) to me . IMHO credit to you for achieving this on a non M car though .

I believe many people who are out for appearance over performance run a connecting pipe across the back of the bumper instead of having 2 back boxes

That's what I did: cheap and sounds/looks good
Performance-wise you really need to spend a lot of money to get an exhaust system that adds (proven) bhp to your car, and mostly it means changing the whole system from front to back to gain maybe 10 extra bhp... I chose for a remap + simple sport exhaust and got 15 bhp extra for a total of 950 euro...

It might be a placebo effect by my car felt more responsive after i fitted my new backbox, not necessarily more powerful but just felt more eager to go!

It also weights less then the stock one which is pretty darn hefty!
