E85 with no Aux receiver

Hi all,

I have a 2004 Z4 (E85) and it has no aux cable receiver. Can anyone please suggest me a video or guideline on how to connect one on my own?
Should one do it on their own or seek professional assistance?

Thank you
Abhi

Easy fix - Buy one of these
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07D56X5PX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and search on the forum or youtube or pelican parts for a guide on how to remove the stereo head unit (easy but tricky the first time)

What is it you wish to achieve with the AUX? Reason for asking is that AUX input will not provide you with the best be audio quality compared to some alternatives. Say you would wish to be able to stream music via Bluetooth: deffo better options out there.

Hi Samm

Thank you for this. I will check it out.

Hi Mau,

Thank you for the response. My purpose would be to listen music with good sound. If you are suggesting streaming music would give me better quality, I would check that option out too. Do you have any suggestion on any particular hardware I need to connect?

There are definitely guides out there to retrofit an aux port down in the panel where the roof control etc go, as people have said.
However I'm with some others here in wondering why you're opting for aux instead of replacing the unit entirely?

I threw an aftermarket Sony into mine. Has aux, Bluetooth and USB so I can use the USB port to charge my phone while on long journeys. I'd definitely look into that option.

If you're going to be playing low quality mp3 files then bluetooth streaming or connecting via an aux cable are both suitable options.
If you're going to be playing hi-res FLAC,WAV,AIFF files etc. (16bit 44.1kHz redbook standard and higher) then bluetooth will always be a compromise to sound quality due to the compression/de-compression that takes place depending on whichever bluetooth codec is being used. Even aptxHD is a compromise. aptxLOSSLESS still hasn't been released afaik.

But then again, in the already compromised listening environment of your zed you may not even notice the difference.

Hi Zed,

Thank you for the response. Oh, replacing the unit sounds tempting. Can you please suggest me the Sony product you used?

Hi Chris,

Selecting one of the option does sound like a tricky move. I will check out some youtube videos just in case, before deciding anything. Thank you

I got this one (purely because I wanted to change the colour to match the Maldives Blue of my car itself. But I know curry's or halfords do the cheaper one that has only one preset colour. What I actually did was use that website down below, then find it on curry's and use their price match guarantee to make them honour the price and order it from them as they have free postage (I've also never heard of studio as a company), but I can't seem to find that particular model on curry's website.

You'll need a wire harness and a radio faceplate if you're going down this route though.

Sure, there is way better audio quality possible depending on file format. My point is rather that if you wish to be able to use say Spotify (thus: poor quality audio files) in the Z4, you either need to plug in your phone directly into an AUX cable, or you may wish to chose a Bluetooth option such as Bluemusic: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/263293158739?epid=4008475189&hash=item3d4d7ec553:g:gsoAAOSwIWtft8Hx.

The costs of a Bluetooth solution pretending to be your CD change are comparable to the costs of AUX install + wiring / bluetooth unit linking into AUX, however sound quality - even with poor quality audio files - will be better when comparing such Bluetooth / CD-changer solution to an AUX solution.

Plus: despite no titles showing with a Bluetooth solution you will be able to skip tracks, etc., the music will stop when receiving a call, or switching of the ignition and start to play again afterwards, etc. AND it will save you separate wires and / or units that need additional charging. To me thus a less faffy and cleaner solution with about the same price tag.

So to summarise: when comparing the same - admittedly poor - audio format being played either via an AUX-driven solution or via a Bluetooth / CD changer driven solution, I would always recommend the latter.

It all depends on what is considered 'good' or 'poor' audio format/source.

I have both aux and BT in my car.
If I use the aux option with my phone and DAC playing 32bit 96kHz files then this is obviously a 'better' solution from a sonic perspective.
If I use the BT connection I know I can only stream via aptxLL up to 16bit 44kHz which is compressed and decompressed via the BT codec.
Placebo tells me I can tell the difference.

Sure. But that is not how your average person deals with this nowadays. By far the most people use BT as a standard in and out the house and as such have accepted its limitations in terms of maximum audio quality. If that is your point of reference, you are better of in the Z4 with BT than with AUX.

If you are an audio purist, well, you may not wish to listen to music in the "compromised environment" of your Z4 in the first place, as you rightfully set out in your above post.

Personally, I have found myself using wired headphones a lot particularly if I'm on my own with the hood down on long drives. I'm sure I'm skirting the fringes of legality but here in NL it seems anything is allowed these days. I see people drifting/texting on practically every drive these days. I'm gonna get rear-ended one day, I know it. But at least I won't hear it coming.

I actually was going to do an AUX modification on my Z4 but I decided against it since I'd rather leave it stock.

I bought a bluetooth FM transmitter and I actually love it! I leave it plugged into the cig lighter and it's always on, so when I get in the car--my smartphone automatically connects to it. Sound quality is good for what I want: my favorite music at any time.

If you want the BEST quality, consider burning a CD of an album or playlist you want to hear at high fidelity. Aux isn't that much better and plugging it in to your phone gets old after a while.

I actually bought this FM transmitter which looks great and matches the aesthetics of the Z4 interior. It has a 2AMP charger built it and another charger input in case you have a passenger that needs juice at the same time too! It's a Scosche Bluetooth FM transmitter. It fits perfectly inside the small cig lighter area!
