E85 will not start - multiple problems or just one?

Couldn't locate the physical module, but my scanner was able to supply the following: BMW part no 6942102, coding index 4, date of manufacture 14.10.2003, diagnosis index 2656, hardware number 03, supplier Autoliv, physical hardware no 6936186, trouble code 98CA not present.
I'm curious: what's the difference between the 'BMW part number' and the 'physical hardware number'?
Apologies for treating you like the font of all knowledge, but you've clearly walked this path before!
Ok, so the '2102' isn't too rare. I think I have some.
It seems to be the software part number, even though it is printed on the label.
If you have to replace it then regardless of which compatible part you find, the software will always default to the latest version. So you can end up with a different number on the module to what the actual software is inside. It is that software number which will show up on your scan.

So, in this case you can see that your module has since been superceded by 5 later ones. If it had ever been replaced it would probably now read '6977399'

Front airbag right is the one in the steering wheel. Has it ever been removed?
There are two plugs on that airbag, stage 1 and stage 2. Each one has a clip on the back that must be present and pushed in to make the circuit.
So it's possibly an issue there.
Also, pull the drivers seat fully forward and put your hand into the gap in the carpet. If it is wet under there then there is a fair chance damp has got into the module.
