E85 Vanos solenoid coding?

My mechanic fitted new Vanos solenoids on the Zed this morning but on starting the engine it was showing up the EML light. A colleague of his thought that the new solenoids needed to be "coded in" but I've never heard of this before. My mechanic thinks the car just needs to be run for a while so the engine can learn the new set up. Who is right?
Thanks in advance as usual.

No they don’t need to be coded.
Just need to reset fault code and good to go.
No need to run the car for a bit. He’s talking rubbish
