New to me 2003 Z4 3.0 6-speed with sport mode button. Can I assume it has Sport Mode? When I push button there are no lights or changes of any kind. Any advice on diagnosing the status? Thank you.

When you push the button you should notice the steering feeling a bit heavier and the throttle response being sharper.

Does the light on the button illuminate?

If not it may indicate deeper issues (potentially with EPS)

I'm new to these cars, too. The sport button, when I remember to press it, illuminates with a red dot on the button. It stiffens the steering, sharpens the throttle, and the exhaust peps up. The car becomes more urgent, fun, although I'm not sure of the impact it has on fuel consumption.

On an auto it also holds the gears for longer.
There is no change to anything in the exhaust system.
It changes the throttle map: imagine that in normal driving, when you push the pedal down halfway it only opens the throttle one third, with the rest of the opening coming in later in the pedal range. In Sport the halfway push actually opens the throttle two thirds. (These are approximations).
So in fact, what happens is simply that you get more throttle for less movement, conning you into thinking you have loads of extra power.
I can only assume it is this extra throttle opening that makes the exhaust seem louder, by the simple expedient of hurling more burnt gasses down it (increasing your fuel consumption at the same time).
