E85 Roof

I’ve just taken the hardtop off my car and the roof isn’t working, and I can manually operate it.

Windows are dropping and the final closing process is then working.

Looks like it’s the motor, and looking online it looks like it was an old design fault of sorts, leaving the motor submerged in water?

I’ve had a local workshop check the car over and they cannot find an obvious electrical fault, and the local BMW independent specialist doesn’t touch this part of the work, and himself doesn’t know who does.

Any help much appreciated including a specialist?

J

there are a few scattered around that will help you - but we need to know where you are so we can point you to the nearest one.
as you say it will be sitting in water - with thr roof down you will see a gap passenger side behind the door - if you push a rod down there and have a dig you will probably dislodge the dirt and muck down there and it will all come pouring out - you might find the roof will then work again - a more permanent fix is to use one of our roof gurus who will relocate the motor to the boot and your motor wont drown again. but if it is clogged as we think the next stop is the carpets and the airbag modules - so look lively :)

It looks like the motor... bit expensive I’m being told, so I think the hardtop is going on and looking like a Coupe.

It won't cost you more than £80 - £120 to get put right (including motor relocation to the boot area to prevent it happening again). There are about 4 or 5 members on here that specialise in this. As Road Warrior says, just a matter of seeing who is closest. The problem by the way is likely to be the manual release plunger that is corroded in, meaning you can operate the roof manually but the hydraulic power is bypassed via an internal valve.

If there is water in the well where the roof motor/pump is located it must have been there a long while. This is because when the hardtop is fitted NO rain water can enter the hood 'gutter' and then gather in the well due to a blocked drain.
I would unblock the drains and see if any debris/water comes through. I bought a Trumpet cleaning brush on Ebay for this job

 Then maybe give it chance to dry out and see if it works again. Obviously, get the pump relocated to the boot asap

Where abouts are you?

As said there are a number of forum folk skilled in sorting this issue out. For very sensible money. Who is best to contact depends on where you are located / able to get your Zed to. :)

Oh and welcome to the board.

Welcome to the forum, you have got off lightly so far. I'm amazed no one has ask...
:worthless:

Hi and welcome OP.

Hopefully you aren't too far from one of the forum members who can sort roof motors out.

Oh, and we do like to see photos!

You can’t clear the drain on the motor side from the top as the motor sits directly over the drain hole.

Be that as it may, because that's exactly what I did a month ago when my motor died and stopped working. I poked a steed rod down and water poured out and mins later my motor worked again and still is.

There are splendid chaps on here that will help .Mike at z shed sorted mine and relocateded it works perfectly now

Hi Folks, my apologies for not getting back to everybody. We tried a local specialist BMW dealer and another local garage, seems we are struggling. We have left the hardtop in the garage, and weather hasn’t been great, and whilst we can man-handle the manual then it’s a pain. I’m based in. Cheshire, so if there is a Forum helper then please let me know... the sun is coming out!

at the risk of sounding grumpy you have been told there 5 people around the country that will do it, so im wondering why you ignored that and went to a bmw indi who wont have a clue except to charge you 500 quid for a new motor and put it in the same place for it die later again -

Sorry to offend, but I did say that I was putting the hard top back on. I never originally said where I was from, but I’m in Cheshire, if anybody is able to point me in the right direction? We have done all the poking with a stick stuff but no success, and we thought it was worth trying a local place. Who I might add was very nice and helpful, but didn’t get involved in these kinds of repairs.
So any help in the North-West then great and thanks.

I’ve had a PM and thanks and a recommendation from Road Warrior thanks very much. I’m a bit new to all this stuff, but fingers crossed I get sorted. Jude

Hi, look up “Durham Dave” on here using the search bar, he does a great job at a reasonable price
