E85 Roof Motor

Despite the advice off this forum and the best efforts of enuff_zed, my roof motor is dead :headbang:

Does anyone having a working motor available for sale before I start a trawl through eBay?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Nathan, gutted we couldn't fix it.
Even with Bigwinn on call it seems something inside is dead. It spins freely by hand and after repairing a pinched wire and a blown 40A fuse there was definitely 12v there, but nowt happening!
On the plus side, for now the duff one is neatly located in the boot and it'll be an easy swap over, as long as we catch all those little perishin' pins this time.
Still it was a nice sunny day and I got to meet a fellow enthusiast, so it wasn't all wasted.
Hope you find one quick so we can get it up and running again.

PS. New (non-split) intake boot is on it's way to me so that should stop your hissing noise too.

Yes a pleasure to meet you Martin, and a very enjoyable morning in the sunshine even if we didn't (yet) get the final result we wanted in the end!

I have a faulty pump and following tips on here / elsewhere have bought a mini cooper cabriolet one from a breakers on ebay. These look identical. Perhaps explore this option and take a view. Mine was £35 all in and looks new

Just to confirm, it's the motor Nathan needs, not the pump?

So looking at buying one, and there seems to a few motors available on eBay but they don’t have the metal spacer between the motor and the hydraulic unit. Does that bit come off my old one, or do I need to buy a new motor with that spacer attached? This is one without:

or with:

Am I likely to need new seals too?

Thanks!

I’ve got one on my donor car. I’m out of the country until Tuesday if you can hang on?

That would be great, thank you! How much would you be looking for?

Let me get get it out and check it over but how’s £60 delivered sound?

If that's for the whole assembly, motor and pump, and it works proper like, then methinks Nathan should say it sounds fine.
It would save me faffing about splitting the motor from the pump, then 2 hours searching the gravel drive for all those tiny pins.

If he says no, then please let me be next in line. :D

Yes assuming it's all working, that sounds great, thanks! I'll pm you once confirmed

Hi z4lincs,
I’ve unbolted the roof motor tonight. It been relocated at some point in its life into the boot and the rust on it gives a good clue why. It works fine and spins freely.

It was only 2 allen bolts to remove. Have you taken the pump off as well? I might have to have another look in the light tomorrow to see how that comes off.

I won’t bother if the rust on the body is a concern.

I actually helped Nathan with this and we unbolted the motor from the pump, but the section above the motor came with it too, the bit with the plastic circular bit in it. I assume that will come off his easily enough to fit onto that one?
It's Nathan's money, not mine so I can't decide for him, but the condition of the outer casing isn't a huge issue is it? You can probably wrap it in your favourite beer can.
More importantly, Nathan's spins freely by hand, but something has died inside so although there's 12v getting to it, there's no movement.
So firstly, can you confirm that your one does actually spin with power applied to it please?

Yeap all works fine. I’ve tested it both on and off the car.
Nearly shot out of my hand the first time I connected 12v off the car. One handed video alert of me testing it :)

Curiosity got the better of me so I’ve just had a look in the boot again. Another video of the pump wheel and how it fits together. You should be able to pull the motor and pump plastic wheel apart.

HTH

Have you tried pulling the motor apart to see if you’ve got a corroded connector inside? If it’s dead you have nothing to lose I guess.

Just to piggyback a question on to this if I may.
When we removed Nathan's motor, it unbolted with the spacer, plastic circular insert etc. still attached. We'll need to swap this over, but it looked a fairly solid fit.
Can anyone please explain how the top spacer section comes off, and whether we'll need new seals or anything else?
Thanks

I’ve posted the whole unit to Nathan this morning including the pump connector (central housing and plastic disc) and the washer so you have a spare.

It was a push fit so as long as you keep it as clean as possible (no obvious grit etc) the Allen bolts should clamp it all back down tight.

If you’ve had any pnuematic oil spills top it up with jack oil before first test. You don't want to be fighting an airlock. Good luck I hear this weekend you guy get on the spanner’s to get Summer ready :)

Ah that's great. Be much easier to see how it all goes together. Got loads of jack oil ready.

Well Nathan just left here with a fully functioning roof, thanks to the power of the forum.
If it ever stops raining he'll actually be able to use it.

Great feeling for me to see him happy with it and thanks to Street for sending down the replacement motor so quickly.

Interestingly the motor in Nathan's had been replaced, but not moved, about 7 years ago.
It had extra lengths of wire to adapt from the original small spade connectors to the larger ones on the motor.
The block housing the plastic disc was also mounted directly to the motor.

The replacement from Street had the smaller spade connectors and also a spacer plate between the motor and the block.

Thanks [ref]Street[/ref] for sending down the whole lot as we couldn't separate the old assembly so used everything you sent.
