E85 - roll over protection system

Seen the system on the Mercedes that fires up a full roll bar rather than roll hoops - pretty sure the E85 doesn't have the system on show - wouldn't mind it though. . .

:driving:

Yeah the roll bars behind the seats are part of the cars frame and are fixed in place, but they are higher than your head (unless your very tall) so will provide the same function.

This, plus it's only a two seated so the windscreen will offer protection where as sitting in the back of a 3 series won't.

Sadly I am very tall and my head does protrude above both the roll bar and the top of the windscreen - only marginally though, so in the event of an accident I should retain some brain function :-)

I am not too worried about it... at the end of the day, it is safer than the motorbike I got rid of for it!

I was just curious if the E85's system might pop up if needed, but clearly not.

Thanks for the answers.

maybe perfect a ducking technique?? :D

danmiddle2 is probably on the mark with the safety comment. not sure how strong the window frame is but i would guess the next rigid structure will be the block so imagine a line between the hoop and and top of engine and thats your safety zone... sort of... aim to duck into that area....

When you cruise up behind people on the road in your Zed, they must look in the rear view mirror and think to themselves 'not another ducking bmw driver, grrr'

The windscreen frame is intentionally designed to be part of the roll over protection system. The A pillars appear to be fairly substantial in my eyes for a fairly light vehicle. This is typical of all cars these days, not just convertibles. Manufacturers have resorted to using extremely hard, rigid alloys in windscreen frames to meet structural requirements, so much so that rescue tools have had to be modified to enable them to be able to cut through the hardened material.

Still, despite such an enhanced structure, I would still expect significant deflection in a roll over due to the substantial rake of the frame. The "duck zone" isn't nearly as small as the line to the engine, but it's smaller than the line between windscreen frame and roll hoops.
