E85 Roadster Wiper Issue

OK so every so often my wipers did not return to the bottom of the screen, only by a cm or 2 sometimes and usually when the weather means they have to be used rather than just a clean of the screen.

So I followed the procedure on the forum with regards to removing the grease from the copper plate inside the motor and replaced eveything but due to the wiper arms having splines on them it took some time to find the right place.

Anyway what I have now noticed is that despite doing the cleaning procedure the wipers are still stopping above where i think they should do, I have also found that you can manually push them down a bit and pull them up A LOT (disturbingly) :thumbsdown: :thumbsdown:

Does this mean the play is inside the motor and hence fooked :(
Do I need to replace it? :(

Ideas, resolutions appreciated hopefully that dont cost a bleedin bomb considering I have just put new discs and pads all round plus 4 new boots :thumbsdown:
 
Loads of views but no replies. £254.59 with 10%discount from Sopers in Lincoln but dont want to replace if its not going to cure :?
 
I was going to say I wouldn't write off the motor without checking the rest of the mechanism, but looking at Realoem it looks like a one piece set! Might be worth checking nothing has come loose in the mechanism that you might be able to tighten.
 
I'm sure there is another post with the same problem a few months ago

PS there was a complete wiper unit on eBay for £60 a couple of weeks ago, so keep an eye out

I had the same problem, I took the car to an auto electrician and he told me the motor just needed cleaning and re assembling. Not sure how accurate he was but it's been fine since. I'm now £140 lighter though.
 
A large amount of play without obvious linkage problems indicates the internal gearing is badly worn. Not the motor's fault per se, but matters little, as the whole thing gets replaced. Another indication the whole thing is not properly lubricated.

ive had the same problem since getting the car, my wipers dont park at the bottom, about 2inc above, also if the windscreen is wet and im doing motorway speeds they also get pushed up the windscreen on their own!

Yep exactly the same for me. I went to the dealers (Sheffield Sytner) yesterday for a handbrake adjustment and one of the guys from the workshop came out to see me after I asked the question. He reckons the motor may have been removed at some stage form the assembly and its doing slightly more than one revolution. he said he thinks there are arrows on the assembly where it should be lined up with so thats something for my next set of days off to check. It sort of makes sense as I got the impression the Windscreen cowl had been off before so maybe it was to do something with the wipers.

sounds like this could be it! although i dont think ill be taking any tools to my car as im not technically minded at all lol
 
Same story here. Took my motor out and gave it a clean following the DIY and the fecking things are still parking too high. No improvement what so ever. I figured that I had cleaned enough of the grease out as in totally degreased the copper plate. I thought this would be a bad move.

Not sure I want to take that plastic panel below the window off again as a few of the clips snapped from the panel when it came off. I glued them back on (not in) so dare say they would snap again and wouldn't be fixable this time.

Like you I'm sure someone has been in at the motor/wipers before as some of those awful plastic screws were chewed, one was cracked and another replaced with a metal screw.
 
Im gonna try summit tomorrow Im gonna take the wipers off then im gonna gove them one cycle and then replace the wipers. After talking to the tech guy I did not do this so its worth a try, if it doesn't work then its cowl off again and recheck everything. :headbang: :headbang:

umm yes, i have found that above *certain* speeds they do struggle a bit :D
 
Can someone help me identify which is the correct part number to replace these clips that tend to break under the cowl? Please refer to this page. The cowl is #1. #2 is the 4 rivets along the front that are first removed. That leaves #6 and #28. Hard to tell what's what from the diagram. I think it's #28. Can someone confirm? And if so, what's the other one used for?
 
I'm pretty sure it's number 28. I can't remember exactly how many of them there are but it's close to 10. Only a few of mine broke but it wasn't the clips themselves that broke it was the little kind of slots on the panel that they go into.

The clips (no 28) are a 2 part push rivet type affair. The female part goes into the bodywork panel below the window and the male side slots into a wee plastic panel that is built up off the bottom of the scuttle panel. The built up bit that takes the male part is quite fragile and brittle, unlike the rivets. This is why these seem to give first.

It's a bad design but if you are careful and possibly pry the clips out with a trim removal tool or push them out from underneath then you should avoid breaking them. Unfortunately I went at it like the incredible hulk.
 
Thanks mowflow, much clearer now. I think I shall go ahead and just be careful with a trim tool and not worry about having replacements on hand. :thumbsup:
 
Should be fine if you are careful. If any snap it will be the panel part rather than the clips themselves so spare clips won't be needed. The panel bits can be repaired but will probably only be good for one fix.
 
Well I took everything apart again an going by punch marks an the way the motor is connected to the whole assembly I can't see how it would have moved/been moved. So I am at a loss, wondering whether to now bite the bullet an replace whole assembly :( :(
