E85 oil service

Afternoon peeps,

my car is due for an oil service, just wanted to ask who has had one recently, and how much did it cost?
oh, and if you went to a dealer, what engine do you have in your Z4?
I've got a 2003 3.0, based in London - for an oil service + cabin microfilter I've been quoted:

£210 inc VAT by Broad Oak BMW in Kent
£244 inc VAT by Vines BMW in Redhill
£281 inc VAT by Stephen James BMW in Blackheath

Am I missing a trick here? I know oil is a bit expensive at the moment, but an oil and filter change being more than £200! Strangely, the same dealerships advertise oil services on their websites for £149, if you have a 6-cylinder E46. Some kind of Z4-tax being applied? The standard answer on the phone is 'well, it's a different car'... "Yes, I'm well aware of that... oh never mind"

My car has a full BMW main dealer service history, I would prefer to keep it for resale purposes, but I'm beginning to wonder if it's really worth it. Any views on specialists or doing it yourselves?

Mine was just due last week, I had full BMW SH but in the end just did it myself. I kept the receipts and took loads of photos which I've added to my SH. BMW wanted £206 and couldn't fit me in for another 2 weeks.

Materials were £60 ish, took 30 mins.

I live in London if you want a hand I'm happy to help you. I'm going to change mine every 5000 now.

do it youreslf fo £35. ish, depends how friendly you are with the local motor factors.
are you aware that many bmw dealers use 3rd party garages for mot's and oil services???? like quik fit.
paying another man to service your car is like paying another man to service your wife.

MOTs yes as not all dealers have the facility (and my local dealer told me this and it would be cheaper to take it for an MOT myself) BUT where on earth did you get the notion that some dealers use Quick Fit for oil changes...... please tell me which dealers they are so I can contact BMW UK and report the issue. :|

Sounds like complete and utter nonsense to me too. Plus, that 'saving' of doing it yourself will almost certainly back fire in the future when you try and sell with an incomplete history. These are sports cars, not 20 year old runabouts.

There was a thread on PH about dealers outsourcing small items, oil changes, Tyres and brakes...

I wouldn't DIY inspection 1 or 2, but oil change is fine..

That said I'm never selling the zed

you should be able to do better than that, Vines at Gatwick only wanted to charge me £199 for an inspection 1 at Xmas, so £244 for just oil is expensive.

We are talking about undoing a sump plug at the bottom of the engine (1x spaner needed ) then watch all the oil drain out put that plug back in,
undo the oil filter at the top of the engine ( 1 x oil filter spaner ) remove old filter then replace with new, undo oil filler cap and poor in the correct amount of oil put filler cap back on, start engine and run, stop engine leve to stand for a short time, remove dipstick to check oil level  The oil's and filter would only cost Max £60.00 and if you wonted you could buy the snap on tools to do the job and get to keep them lets say for £100.00. and then you are left knowing that the job has been do correctly cos you dune it your self, you just got 2 very shiny snap on spanners that you get to keep and use again an that you saved your self money. i'm sorry but £200.00 + for that, its harder to drive round the M25 in rush hour than do your own oil change

I hate the dealerships pricing policy. Check this out for an inspection 2 :

SCUNTHORPE £220.00
NOTTINGHAM £270.00
GRIMSBY
DONCASTER £282.00
HULL £282.00
DERBY £292.00
PETERBOROUGH £312.00
LINCOLN £318.68
BOSTON £330.00

Lincoln in the end price matched and i got it for £209. Result ! Shop around and haggle even the service guys are sales guys they all have to meet targets.

100% true, My next door neighbour took her 07 mini into bmw chesterfield for an mot and it came back with another local garages name on the mot.

And several people have seen there cars at large chain garages having oil changes.

And i doubt very much it will lower the price on your car when you sell it, so long as you have the recipts for the oil and filter and you date and record the miles.

I would rather buy a car that has been done by an enthusiast than one that has had the oil changed every 2 years or 15000 miles, that to me and many people is just wrong to leave oil in an engine for that long.
