E85 oil filter damage question

Just giving the Z its first service in my hands.Removed the oil filter and it fell apart in my hands, unlike the new mahle replacement it doesn't have any top bottom gaskets..it's my first time changing this type of cartridge filter as all previous cars have canister type.Is this normal :o :o and is there any other replacement procedure I should follow bar oiling up the top gasket provided.ill post a pic when my phone is recharged ???

I only use genuine filters bought from a BMW dealer , the risk to an engine is too great to use anything else ( IMO )

Filter after removal

Top cover, does this all look ok, I havnt seen one before

Mahle replacement, supposed to be as good as oem ???

The rubber gaskets on the Mahler dong seem to be present or I'm wondering if they are stuck in housing and top lid sections still

I'm pretty sure I can see the rubber top gasket in your top housing in the photo, try to get it out with something plastic

Think I got a large top o ring and sump plug gasket but didn't see a spike o ring

Have you had a good look in that oil filter cap yet? It really does look in your photo like the top rubber of the filter is still in there? Implying the bottom one has either disintegrated or is still in the engine side?

Wow when was that last changed!! Looks like it's had a few oil suck out changes instead of doing it properly. It does look like some of the old filter is still in the housing..as mentioned. I would go for another oil change quite quickly after this change, just to get all the crap out.

Agreed. Bung some cheap oil in (euro car parts own fully synth or similar) and change it after 1k.

That filter has done a LOT of miles..

The top of the filter has broken off the paper element and its in the oil filter cap.

Remove before refitting your fresh filter

Awful state, as said above that must have seen some miles. FBMWSH?
You don't need to use BMW filters, Bosch and Mann are two OEMs and I've seen both brands with BMW stamps on, so the quality will be fine without the 100% price hike.
You can get all the bits for two full changes from car parts 4 less for under £90.

you should completely clean your oil filter housing with a rag to see if there arent any pieces left that can clog stuff.

The filter could be damaged when screwing off the top cap. For instance when the o ring was sealing very tight and the filter didnt have a lot of internas strenght. But apparently a pretty crap filter.

That's got all the hallmarks of a cheap filter and left in so long that it has disintegrated, party by being clogged and the pump sucking it to pieces and partly by the simple act of removing it.

Plenty of advice above about cleaning, flushing, etc.
I'd certainly run some oil for 1k and then another oil and filter change as your new filter will be clogged pretty quick with crap in the system.
