Hi all I'm a newbie to owning a Z4 so my knowledge isn't great but am a BMW man I currently have 3 e30s . Iv just bought a 2006 Z4 and has few issues. Bonnet won't open- alarm goes off constantly-elec windows and wipers won't work have been told this is a module behind glove box by previous owner but wasn't sure- soft top won't open but once opened manually it will close by Button . Any help appreciated thank you

Also a newbie, but may have some answers for a couple of things. The most common issue with the alarm going off is the bonnet sensor, which is really easy to replace, although not if you can't open the bonnet! I think the best thing to do is to press the lock button twice and see if this stops the alarm going off, this disengages the interior sensors and would rule them out as being the cause of the problem. If the alarm still goes off it is probably the bonnet sensor in which case, when you get the bonnet open, disconnect the sensor (it's in the middle at the back just in front of the wiper tray) and see if that stops the alarm going off. I believe replacement bonnet sensors can be picked up for a tenner and are very easy to fit. What is wrong with the wipers? Are they just not moving at all? I had an issue with the wipers parking about a quarter of the way up the screen which is a common problem and can be fixed by cleaning the grease off some contacts in the motor assembly, there's a post about this in the how to section. Not sure about the roof problem but, as you're probably aware, Z4s have their roof motors in a stupid place near where the water drains from the roof and coupled with the poorly designed plugs at the bottom of these drains, this often results in the motor being flooded with water and needing a replacement or a refurb with most owners opting to relocated the motor to the boot (the previous owner of my Z4 had a new one put in the same place which is a source of constant stress for me!). Not sure about windows either, but have seen a lot of posts about window regulators going so this could be something to look into.

Well firstly welcome aboard.

If your bonnet doesn't release using the lever inside the car it might be worth seeing if you can get someone to push downwards on the 2 front corners while you pull the lever. If it does release but it's the safety catch that won't move (they do seem prone to getting gummed up) lift it as far as you can and spray WD40 or similar onto the pivot of the safety catch - it should free up after a good soaking then you can clean it up and put fresh grease on it. Or you can get a bit more access by taking out the kidney grilles - lift them at the top and pull the bottom forwards.

Your electrical issues sound like they may be symptoms of a dying battery - do you know how old it is? I SORN'd my car for January and as soon as I tried to start it in February all the dash lights went out and the alarm wouldn't stop. I got it fired up with a jump-pack on the terminals in the engine bay and once I had it running the alarm stopped!

If you rule out a battery issue and your roof is still playing up you might want to think about getting the roof motor checked out and relocated to the boot - there are a few forum members who can do it for sensible money.

And if you get a chance we'd like to see a photo or two of your car.

Excellent thanks to you both, yes I'll try a few of them, I know the car has been lying up a bit so hopefully battery charge might help and iv heard of motor problem so I'll look into that thanks again
