E85 - M54B25 2.5i oil confusion

I really need your help, so, I will need to change my oil in Z4 (it has almost 200.000 km), 2.5 engine, 192 HP.

Currently, previous owner put Motul 8100 X-cess - BMW LL-01 SAE 5W40, but now I found out that Castrol EDGE 5W-30 M is better oil for that engine, and also, I found out that I should put LL-01 oil in the engine not LL-04 oil.

And now I am confused, should I stay on Motul 8100 X-cess 5W40 or should I go for another oil?

2.5 owners, what do you put in your Z4?

Thank you!

I had the same 2.5 litre M54 engine in my E46 325ti and I used Castrol Edge Fully Synthetic 0W/40 that met BMW LL01 spec for the 3 years I had it without any issues.

But I wouldn't have thought it makes much difference which brand you use so long as it meets the LL01 standard, although on a higher mileage car (and based on another thread yours does seem to use some oil) I'd personally stick to 5W40 for a wider range than 5W30.

Thank you for your advices and help, just to get right, for this engine I have to have LL01 spec oil, not the LL04 spec?

As I am in Croatia, and we have higher summer temperatures, sometimes almost 40C, I will stick with 5W40 but I will find LL01 spec oil.

LL01 was definitely what BMW specified for the M54 engines. The facelift N52 engines require LL04.

Thank you! :)

So I bought 8 litres (I know I need 6.5 litres) 5W40 Shell Helix Ultra LL01 spec oil. I hope it will be ok. :)

That should be fine as that is what BMW have been using for a while since they stopped using be Castrol Edge.

The Shell you have got will be ideal.

BMW LL01 was the original spec for your car, but just so you know LL04 is backwards compatible, so if you are ever stuck LL04 can be used as well no problem.

Thank you Guy,
It made it much simpler for me to buy the Fuchs LL04 in sufficient quantity for my E85 (M54) and E89 (N20).
I would also like to say that when it all arrived there were only 2x 5 litre bottles, not the 3 I'd ordered.
A quick phone call around lunchtime and the third bottle arrived on my doorstep at 7am the next morning.
That's what I call service!

enuff_zed using LL04 for both is an ideal solution, I think many have also switched over to LL04 anyway as it is so readily available.

Glad the 3rd bottle was sorted swiftly, we do make mistakes sometimes but are dedicated to fixing them quickly and efficiently

Cheers,

Guy

No problem sir, out of our control now. Making sure you are using the correct oil is the main thing

What do you reckon to this stuff Guy (oilman) ? Seems a good price for 10L of LL-04 oil.
