Afternoon all

Oil use in my 2.2 100k miler has just pinged up and I wanted your views:

The car gets a fairly spirited 60 mile round trip once or twice a week (lockdown permitting) and local town runs.

Its gone from full to warning beep in about 1500 miles with no visible signs of burning oil etc- so assume the CCV is ripe for renewal

Is it worth it; does it stop the oil use?

Where to buy a kit from as I don't trust the £20 eBay kits as far as I can chuck them?

Cheers

Stuart

And- if I do it I recall reading about doing the oil filter bolt as that undoes itself?

If you have no visible sign of oil burning why do you suspect the ccv? If it’s knackered then the oily engine vapour gets routed into the inlet manifold where it’s burnt in the combustion chambers.

Thought high oil use was systemic of ccv blocked/poor state

Or is that sort of volume use expected from an old m54?

Hi Stuart. If I remember correctly your Zed is 2004 vintage. Having replaced my full CCV back in April '17 on my '03 car I would be surprised if yours is not past its best. All the plastic pipes/tubes and connectors were extremely brittle and literally crumbling away. The passage of time and thousands of repeated heat cycles really seems to take its toll on M54 rubber and plastic components.
I replaced mine using all separate Febi Bilstein parts purchased on Ebay. Top quality and everything went together perfectly. All part numbers available on https://www.realoem.com/
My car used about half a litre of oil per 1000 miles prior to replacing the CCV and since then I only occasionally put half a litre or less in, usually after a good thrashing on a weekend forum run etc. The car is now just over 88k miles.

Pull one of your DISA valves and check for oil in the inlet manifold. Lots of oil usually = bad ccv.

a new ccv cured my oil-supping B30 issue.
Get the Febi cold climate version with thicker insulation.

Thanks all- Simon thats correct its Jan 04 build- Was looking at dealer prices and its (as per usual) expensive so will see if I can source Febi parts.

I pulled the DISA a while back to check it was secure and no immediate signs of oil clogging- however that was then and I do have on the shelf the rebuild kit to do so it may be different now...

Chris thats what I was hoping I'd hear- is the cold climate kit thicker?

It has thicker insulation around the tubing which could help prevent condensation building up. It’s a little trickier to install however and you may need to loosen the inlet manifold.

Was planning on doing it with the intake manifold off anyways- just to make it easier-

Thank you for the input!
