I’m planning on doing the rear disks, pads and handbrake shoes soon. Can anyone tell me how do I remove the various trim bits around the handbrake lever without breaking the little tabs off like I did on my last Z4?

I did basically the same job 2 months ago (also changed front discs and pads), but didn't mess with the handbrake lever in the cockpit. Didn't see any reason to, swapping out handbrake shoes was purely a rear-end job.
So curious, why would you need to remove the handbrake lever surround?

If I recall (and it may be worth checking TIS) you are supposed to re tension the mech once done at the handbrake end of business?

You need to release the service lock underneath the handbrake lever to correctly adjust the handbrake otherwise the shoes will rub once it’s all back on the ground.

Could be, however there's a retentioning system built in in the rear.
I found this link when doing mine, but as I never messed with the tensioning to begin with (just the shoes), I adjusted via the method of tightening until wheel stopped rotating easily, and then backed off. Worked just fine for me, handbrake is tight after two 'ticks' when pulling the lever. Plus the system is self-adjusting / self-tensioning within reason.
Depends a bit I guess on what you've replaced, and how bad it was to begin with :)
