E85 EPS issue after reinstalling module

Hey everyone! I had some intermittent EPS issues involving losing power steering and sport button not working. I sent the EPS module to ECUtesting.com and they said they successfully rebuilt the module. Upon reinstalling the unit, it was working for a few seconds, but when I turned the wheels, it threw a fault and stopped working. I bought a foxwell code reader and tried to recalibrated the steering angle sensor and even took it to a shop where they did hard reset of the SAS, which was unsuccessful. Now the code 611C is coming up saying not present, EPS: Steering torque. I’ve cleared the codes and reset the SAS and it’s calibrated at zero degrees with the wheel straight but fault comes right back. What the heck do I do now? I appreciate any advice.

If you didn’t have that code before then it is most likely that you haven’t seated the plug from the torque sensor correctly. It’s the top one on the rear of the eps motor which is the hardest one to access.
I suggest you start by double checking that one

I did go back and undo all of the harnesses after clearing codes to replicate the reinstall, but it throws the code right away. Ive been consulting Chat GPT a lot on this project and it says I may need the dealer level ISTA software to reset the torque sensor. I didn’t realize its a separate thing from the steering angle sensor.

It doesn't work like that.
It's a coiled strip around the column near the top. Has enough coils to allow for the column to turn fully both ways.
Any chance you turned the column while the motor was off? If you put one turn on it then it can pull the connections when you turn it to full lock. In which case, you need to either replace the column, or search on here for the member who dismantled one and repaired it.
The reason I mentioned the plug on the EPS motor was because I did exactly that: I refitted it and it all looked good, but eventually I took the motor out again and found one of the pins had bent over.
If the code comes straight back without any steering input then it is less likely to be the torque sensor damaged as it functions as its name suggests, meaning it gives feedback when the steering column turns. On mine, the light came straight on and wouldn't reset, due to the damaged pin.

I agree it is strange. I will take another look at the plugs. The steering column definitely rotated a lot during the reinstall. I had trouble getting it back on the u joint. But my understanding is that would have affected the steering angle sensor, which I reset and is no longer throwing that code.

Yes but if you reset the sxteering angle sensor you've basically just given it a new datum to start from.
The torque sensor ribbon has enough winds to allow it to go fully lock to lock. So if you turned the column one complete revolution while it wasn't fitted, then you have an excess of one turn in the ribbon in one direction, but it will come up short in the other direction and potentially break.
But as I said, that would only manifest itself after you had done a complete lock to lock.

The clock spring actually came apart when I was disassembling so I did purchase a new one for the reinstall. I’ve got an appointment with a shop in town that has the ISTA software so we’ll see how that goes and take it from there. I’ll keep you updated, thanks for the feedback!

The clock spring is NOT the torque sensor.

I am aware of that, I thought you may have been referring to the clock spring since you mentioned ribbons and only allowing for a certain amount of turns. I’ll just see what the shop has to say when they get the better diagnostic equipment hooked up.
