Unless it has been re-shelled. Have you checked engine number with chassis number? Seems strange for bmw to get it wrong? Perhaps stranger though not to re-shell it in the correct colour! Bizarre.

The vin on the front strut tower was correct.
What does the re-shelling involve, or is that just something done during production?
