As we all know, the electronic steering on non M cars is shall we say rubbish.
I am selling as a complete hydraulic upgrade package. This will include:

M Steering column
M Steering rack
M rack arms (pretty much new)
M track rod ends (pretty much new)
M PAS pump
Fluid reservoir (with mounting bracket)and associated pipe work.

£1000

I think the pump/bracket is unique to the M and won't fit others

Mike..

Reservoir bracket sit on the engine mount.

Just been doing a spot of research and you seem to comment on all threads regarding this.

How have others converted to hydraulic?

I'd imagine you'd take all the bits off an E46 330 or 325 etc (rack, rods arms not needed of course). Pretty sure a lot of the M parts won't fit an unmodified standard Z, and the parts that definitely work for the hydraulic conversion are available for buttons really from eBay e46.

I comment because it's something I will be doing myself shortly.

Others have done it using parts sourced from E46"s. The total cost of this is around £250 of you get a remanufactured purple tag rack, or considerably less if you opt for a used rack which is what you are selling.

However I'm glad that you are researching me, makes me feel all warm in the inside

I didn't even think you need to change the rack, is that the case?
Purple tag would seem to be a good shout if so, same ratio as the Z4M pram

Yes, the rack needs changing to a hydraulic one as the std one is a normal unassisted one. The assistance comes from the electric motor attached to the column, which needs physically disconnecting from the system as part of the conversion.

Gotcha. I would like to see how your conversion goes, a must perhaps for many z's, but probably best discussed on another thread, sorry danny.

Getting lost here.

So you also can’t supercharge a standard one because there’s nowhere to put the bracket?

No one know a fabricator round here?

Most people will go the 3 series route. But you still need a z4m lower stering shaft to conect to the upper columb and rack. You can bodge the conection. But thats not somthing i would recoment on the steering system.

But a full M set up will work. Are the engine mounts sub frames all the same architecture? As its a full system it should work with minimal modding and this is a good kit to buy for someone wanting to do this.

Don’t flatter yourself mate. Only says your a keyboard warrior

Well like my other parts, they will sell and I’ve got no urgency. You manage to get a set of M seats for £400?

The whole lot is still in situ.

I did mine last year. I used the E46 purple rack. The cost of a new reconditioned M rack was far too expensive. The intermediate shaft was second hand as a new one is around £400.

Just in case anyone is looking, the pump (and rack) are unique to the ///M as per RealOEM, and although the rack will fit, I doubt the pump would go on an M54/N52 "out of the box"

Mike

I believe the S54 is based on the M54 so it may well bolt on, but I wouldn’t want to try it when a refurb E46 pump is only around £70

That may be an option for me,buy an E46 pump and sell as a set.

Or worst case I put everything in the garage and get them out when people need replacement parts in the future.

Surely you'd be better off selling the Z4M steering parts separately on eBay? There must be some demand for individual replacement parts for accident damaged or faulty Ms, and you'd probably have no trouble shifting the intermediate shaft to a Z4 owner wanting to upgrade from EPS.

I think this thread has highlighted that nobody is going to pay M prices to buy a complete steering conversion kit when equivalent components can be obtained from E46 models (or E9x platform for N52 compatible pumps), and you are pretty unlikely to find an M owner needing to buy a complete kit?

Yup, first refusal on the shaft if you decide to split please...
