E85 Chassis

I was having a bit of a discussion with a friend at the weekend and he was adamant that the old 1 series uses the E85 chassis. Im 99% certain that it doesn't and cannot find any information to say it does on the internet with various bits saying the E81/87 shares many parts with the E46 which makes sense.

However this got me thinking, does the E85 share its chassis with anything else? Not the most interesting of threads but its been on my mind. Thanks!

Yes, Einsers are at least a year or two newer, not to say they were not developed earlier then temporarily shelved. While the Zed shares many components with E46, the chassis itself was designed new from the ground up as a dedicated roadster platform. Any similarity to another platform is superficial and coincidental. This preview of an excellent, but expensive book should give enough information to confirm my statement.

That books isn't that expensive. I ordered direct and got a copy signed by David Lightfoot and Camille who the book is dedicated to.

Cost delivered to UK was $45

I just ordered a copy from Amazon and received a sign d copy. Need to read it over the holidays ( in Scotland we are off till the 6th 👍👍👍)

Well it's £90 now :o any links to it cheaper than amazon?

Hutch posted about buying one for $45 seven years ago, better than money in the bank

Aint that so true! You’d be better off keeping it under your mattress

X1 is based on 1 series chassis but no connection between 1 and E85/86 other than both being designed by Chris Bangle. The 1 shares some components with E90.

E85 is definitely a bespoke roadster chassis. Because of the rear bulkhead and substantial sills it's basically an augmented "tub" (like an Elise), compared to BMW saloons/hatchbacks which tend to be more like unibody designs (although not quite as they are still "panel on...", from what I've seen).
