E85 boot struts

Hi , when you press the boot open button - should the boot open fully? Mine I have to lift so think the 17 year old struts need replacing? Looking on Ebay they seem fairly cheap - any ones recommended?

Thanks

Mine doesn't open fully.
AFAIK, that is normal. The struts are there just to hold it up and assist you opening it.

A friend of mine tells me you can buy struts that have an internal spring that will make it open automatically. I personally suspect he is talking kak!
:D

The lid just clicks up a short distance so you can tuck fingers under the lip and lift it up, the struts just keep it up when its in the open position and dampens the speed it opens at.

Anyone know if the socket joint on the end of the strut unscrews? I ask as looked at a mod on an E39 in the past - never got around to it though! - where you'd replace the struts with ones that have unscrewing ends, you then slip machine springs over the rod on the strut and bingo, boot lid will pop up on its own! :D

I do still have the machine springs, may have to look deeper in to this
