E85 Adding Door Mid Range Speakers

Hi,

I have a 2004 E85 with the basic 6 speaker setup and business CD head (euro RHD). The sound is shockingly poor (unsurprisingly) and I would like to add the mid ranges to the doors as a first move. The door loom/harness only has two cores for audio and these are directly connected to the tweeter. Was there a different door loom for the 8/10 speaker variants or were these speakers wired in parallel within the door?

Thanks

Rob

You can wire the door speakers from the tweeter. If you do it in series you will get the full range without volume loss.

Series: take the + feed from the source, disconnecting it from the tweeter and extend the wire to the + terminal on the new speaker, leave the - connected to the tweeter. Cut a suitable length of wire connecting it from the - terminal on the new speaker to the + terminal on the tweeter.

Cheers, tug

Thanks,

Is this how they were wired from factory (series) ? There are mentions on other threads of the earlier cars having a different loom with spare connectors for the mid range. Do you know where I can find the proper harness/loom pinouts?

All the best

Rob

Thanks for posting Tug, the obvious issues with your suggestion regarding impedance matching aside, I found a breaking Z4 with the Logic 7 system installed (10 speakers). The answer to my actual question (in case anyone every wants to do this) is that there there was a separate door loom for the tweeter only setup and the 2 speaker (tweeter and midrange) versions. The two speaker version has separate wiring for the two speakers which runs back to the door jam. These 4 cores are wired onto a different part of the door connection (the area marked 34/35) and the logic 7 loom has a clip on extension from within the car that attaches to the separate logic 7 audio loom.

My car is a RHD 2004 Z4 3.0i the tweeter only version and has the 6986982 01 door loom. The logic 7 door loom for the same year is 6934604 01. Hope this helps someone adding speakers to their Z4. The door looms are cheap and even if you run your own wiring from the car side of the door jam back this makes the job much easier.

In my view you are better off adding a small behind dash amp or head unit and changing the footwell woofer and door speaker first. I had pretty good results from this for sub £150. Then added an under seat sub and rears but that wasn't necessary.

Thanks James, I did some testing with this but without a midrange in the door the sound is always going to be unbalanced. The door looms and speakers are really cheap on ebay so my point really is that it is an easy and cheap upgrade to add the missing speakers in the door cards.
