e85/86 Specific Android Screen

There is already an Android Auto emulator for these units, it's called Headunit Reloaded and works perfectly as you can see in the photo.... (yes I know this is the e89 version but all of the software is identical)

Thanks. Mine doesn't have a head unit at all though.

?? I dont think you quite got my point, you said you was going to develop an app for Android Auto, and I've said there already is one that works perfectly!
The Android screen for the e85/6 is just over £500 so I doubt very much you'll be getting one for free, good luck if you do though. But if you do produce a new app then well done and I'll try it out

Ian is looking to develop a new app that runs *in* Android Auto (like Waze, TuneIn, Maps etc), he is not trying to development a replacement or alternative to Android Auto itself :D

Arrrr right I see, I stand corrected

Yep Timmy is correct, this is an app to run on Android Auto, not a replacement for Android Auto itself.

We haven't yet agreed a budget for test devices but it'll probably be around £3-4k, so £500 for each head unit isn't a big deal.

So as I understand it, this version is for early z4's with no satnav and will require modification to the dash top?

Is it a fixed unit? Might be a target for thieves if so.

Anybody brave enough to have fitted one yet? I'm tempted!

But what about something like this? Wouldn't take up any of the windscreen, hides itself when not in use, is cheaper, doesn;t require dash modification and is readily available from Amazon.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07PPV37FR/ref=dp_cerb_2

Seems to function similarly.

That's something I'm very interested in myself, it will cover the vents though on the e85.
But my phone currently covers the drivers side middle one anyway.

How about something like this instead...................

You can even put a custom launcher on it as well (yes I know this is the e89 screen, but it works the same)....

That looks great. Is the screen removable?

How do you get on with it blocking the vents?
The screen does remove if needed but its not a pretty hole i must admit, but its almost like a tablet screen with a ribbon cable plugged into the back. To be honest i just turn the vents off and use the side vents, got heated seats and i find the z4's to be a pretty warm car anyway

I think I'm going to go with a Pioneer flip out screen.

I'm wondering if the Pioneer reverse camera will fit on a z4?

Right I've spoken to them, first they have a delay in production, but more importantly this unit will NOT replace the OEM sat-nav version in the e85 it will only fit those that have the full dash and the headunit with the screen. Sorry I only found out today.
Hi - I think a lot of E85 owners who have the factory Sat Nav installed would be interested in replacing it if they were able to develop a mount and system that would do so.

I lost my original account so had to make a new one. Havent been on for a while. I got unit off ali express, ill post seller link if its allowed. Some guys on reddit post about it but leave no info, avin has one (x3 hack). This is the z4 non factory nav version with correct base. If you have factory nav, its nearly double the price, the connection are different, do not buy the same one.. it will not work. From other users, avin is working on a navigation version for z4. Also a lot of places sells the x3 model for z4, you get longer base, not shorter ones and it over laps to the dash.

Basically someone posted photos and leave no notes, so I did the research. Unit outputs into aux, if you can't live with that, this isn't for you. I use this specially for waze, I can't stand traffic. PX6 is the oem tablet code, lots of people makes it but only a few with z4 bases. PX6 RAM: 2gb/4gb/8gb (no good). Flash: 16/32/64 and optional SD Card, 4/6/8 (no good) cores. Its basically android tablet, more memory, more cores run better. I got the 4 core, 64gb memory, load more apps, etc. The 8gb/8 core is what I really wanted but many seller told me its not compatible with z4, I dont see how but there is some 'muc' programming that makes it talk to the car, I didnt want to mess with that so I just got the 4gb/6 core. Performance is good. Waze runs well on it, its also android 9, the older 6/7/8 had issues, lots of fixes in v9. Works out of the box. Basica install is unplug your radio, use the y cable and plug everything in. I ran with it without cutting dash to make sure it works well before I commit.

Cutting dash is hardest, that part took 2-3 hours, trying not to damage the dash. I'm also swapping trim so I pull out all the trim at the same time. I believe you can run the gps wires behind the trim area, that whole location is empty. I punch a hole by the passenger door where the gps, fuse tap usb for dash cam, and rear cam and front cam will come in and out of. Working on the front camera. The HD camera I got off ali express came yesterday. I just did a quick test, one I figure out how to run the wires, Ill post more photos.

This is great, but I feel the better implementation would've been to reroute the fans up top and move the head unit down to where the current radio is, it would've taken up less space and been more in line with the controls.

I totally agreed.. my 2013 rav4 has vent out the top of the dash..

If I had more time to tinker I would have done it. I have a 3d printer at work, I could have spend a little time putting the vent up top but the nav at dash area would take time to figure out..

I've seen people re-route the vents on the E85/86 to the sides of where they currently are in order to accommodate a double din, but it looks awful
