e85/86 Specific Android Screen

Stupid question - does it also act as a hands free connection to your phone, or just nav, audio etc?
Bluetooth handsfree and music streaming.
Apple Carplay / Android Auto (optional)
DAB (optional) etc

Hi Dave, cheers for your reply. If you are by chance able to find out, it might help me (and others) make a decision.

What I meant, is that at the moment the satnav screen for example displays which fm radio station is tuned, and which song on a cd you're listening to. As the e85's that came fitted with satnav have a slightly different head unit, than those that came without. See attached picture. 20190311_200215.jpg

So, if the new screen is able to show some of the bits, which the satnav used to show, that would be quite good to know.
Yep I see what you mean (like I say I'm not an e85 man  )
I'll pass this info back to the manufacturers and see what we can find out.

I will update this thread as much as I can

Cheers for looking into this, even though you dont own an e85 yourself! :D much appreciated

Please feel free to shoot me down but I would presume it’s a variation on all of the one that you can currently get for newer cars and uses the aux in for connection to the speaker system for all functions much like an iPad for instance would do. It looks after the graphics itself and has standard apps preloaded . Most do video/ sat nav / usb etc . Lots on eBay for other BMWs which I would say have the same basic system in a different shaped box,

Nothing to shoot you down on, you are absolutely spot-on, this one being specifically shaped for the e85 dash top

Dave (AnubisZed),

Any progress with that template thing? Or did you want me to remove the pop up display and trace out the hole?
Also, is there a web site for these displays I can view?

No nothing yet. The problem here is that it is that new that they've jumped the gun a little in telling me about it.
No don't take it out yet, as soon as I have more info u will post it on here. Alas I'm away for a week so I'll post up when I get the chance, but I will be chasing it up as well as other information.

any updates or news regarding progress with the E85 version?
Yes, firstly sorry for the lack of an update but I was away in Wales with very little internet coverage.

Right I've spoken to them, first they have a delay in production, but more importantly this unit will NOT replace the OEM sat-nav version in the e85 it will only fit those that have the full dash and the headunit with the screen. Sorry I only found out today.

yeah that's the one. The company I've been talking to still haven't released this unit, so you're as good getting it from there are you are from my one (no, not my actual company lol)

This will definitely need a guinea pig!

It states that it doesn’t fit sat-Nav dashes but requires cutting a standard dash. That’s gonna take some balls!

Shame they couldn’t make it stick to the dash and direct a flat cable behind the dash (windshield side) to behind the existing stereo.

Chap on one of the Facebook pages is trying to push this company for a E85 model - too much money to risk it however for me.

I have an Android head unit in my Octavia and it is hands down amazing.

Hi,

Did anyone ever receive this and get it working ok?

I'm an app developer and also have an E85, and I've been commissioned to make an Android Auto app so need something to test it on. Hopefully this will work.

I already have the app working on a phone and tablet, but Android Auto is slightly different than those.

The main differences are in the UI, as Android Auto has an always on screen, plus from a UX point of view things need to be designed a little differently (e.g. bigger buttons). In addition my app would need to be tested while moving at high speeds, which isn't particularly feasible to test myself with a tablet.

Gotcha - you know Android Auto can be run on loads of things though right? So stick a phone/tablet on your dashboard, running Android Auto which in turn is running your app, and that's very close to what you're trying to replicate :driving:

(PSST, cool it with the cheaper suggestions, if I can justify it as a business expense I get a free head unit installed  )
